A little once in a while is probably fine. There is a dog food called AVODERM that contains avocados.

Hey if you have so many extras, send some to me!:D They're over $2 apiece in the grocery store!

Thanks for your info,

So, what's the specialty of AVODERM, is it to moisten the skin?!?! :)

My hubby made Avocado juice last night and my dogs had 1 cup each.. I hope he wasn't poisoning my fur kids... :o

We have lots of avocado, I think for 2 US$ we have 2,5 kgs.. I will send you some kgs if you want.. :D

LOL

I was thinking the exact same thing:D ! I love my pups but I LOVE avacados and they cost too much to share with anyone (I would leave hubby out of it if I could get away with it). When I was in S. Africa a couple of years ago, they had huge bags of avacados for around US $0.75 each. When we told my sisters host family what avacados go for in the US, he spent the remainder of our trip trying to figure out how to get avacados to the US to sell!

Are you sure about that?

I have a parrot, who can eat just about anything that humans eat, and avacodo is on the BIG NO list from the vetrinarians right next to chocolate! I checked when I first read this post in the texts and again, for a large bird it is a NO. While realizing all e-site are not created equal..I found avacado listed as toxic to DOGS on 4 different sites on my first search.

From Universitydog.com
"There are many common foods, plants and flowers that can be very toxic to your dog.
Below you'll find a list of the most common types:
Alcohol (all beverages, ethanol, methanol, isopropyl), Almonds*, Amarylis bulb*,Apricot*, Autumn crocus ( Colchicum autumnale)* ,Avocado (leaves, seeds, stem, skin)*, Azalea (entire rhododendron family), Begonia*, Bird of Paradise, Bittersweet, ..."

From another site:
Avocados: The fruit, pit and plant are all toxic. They can cause difficulty breathing and fluid accumulation in the chest, abdomen and heart

This is repeated on several vetrinarian's sites.
Please be careful!! Check with your vet?

That sure seems like alot! I thought you meant a little thin slice here and there...

How are your dogs feeling now?

Not the fruit itself. Like Mangoes, the skin and pit is toxic but not the fruit itself. But I sure wouldn't be giving large amounts!

Doubting the internet

So, I worried over legitimacy of where I looked and then remembered the ASPCA Poison Control Center in NYC for Animals, avacado DID make their list. Here's the rest for good measure:
Alcoholic beverages
Avocado
Chocolate (all forms of chocolate)
Coffee (all forms of coffee)
Fatty foods
Macadamia nuts
Moldy or spoiled foods
Onions, onion powder
Raisins and grapes
Salt
Yeast dough
:p :p :p
I know it's bad when the parrot can't eat it..they eat EVERYTHING! (Anyone know why the skin and pit are toxic but not the fruit itself? Just curious)

I'd feel better if POPPYHONEY would post, a whole cup of juice sure seems like alot! With avocados worth thier weight in gold here, I figured she just meant a taste!

Check this site out and see what you think, Maddiesgirl.Avoderm pet foods

I guess I thought if avocados were toxic, they wouldn't be in business for long!;)

Avocadoes are quite toxic to some birds, but I've never heard of them being problematic for dogs. Mine sometimes get avocados...

...yep, I just checked. All my dogs are still breathing. :D

Wow..
I couldn't put my trust on my vet here about kind of food not to give for dogs. (it's better for me asking such question to this forum) He even didn't know that Chocolate or onion are toxic for dog :(

My dogs are fine. They are happy, healthy, sleep and eat a lot :D . I don't see anything wrong with them.

Mangoes are toxic too??
They love mangoes!!! :o

Well, maybe I have to list kind of fruit my dogs usually have :
Mango
Banana
Orange
Young coconut
Apple
Pear
Nata de coco
aloe vera

Are those including in NO lists??
My dogs love those fruits, but I never give them in large amount, only for their taste and variations.
The avocado juice was an accident. My hubby told me he shared the juice with them when my dogs had emptied their bowls!!!

Whew! I was kind of worried there, Poppy! I consider myself pretty well informed but Maddiesgirl had me worried that I gave you junk advice and your dogs might get sick.

No, the fruit of the mango is OK, but the skin and pit are toxic. You are so lucky to live where fruit is so plentiful! I swear I was a monkey in my last life. There is no such thing as a fruit I don't like and I would rather have fresh fruit than candy, cake, or cookies ANYDAY! :D

We do get oranges year round and boy do my Rottie girls love them! I could use oranges for bait in the show ring instead of liver!:D

I have a friend who lives by avacodo orchards and when she walks her dogs, they scarf them up like crazy. Beautiful shiney coats! She also used them for one dog who had trouble holding weight.

Don't think they're toxic. Her oldest Rottweiler bitch (dam of my girl) just passed away today at age 13 plus.

Thank you,

I am convinced now that avocado is not a toxic. And sure my dogs would have another avocado juice.. but not as much as they had yesterday :o

(I have to hide this thread from my husband, otherwise he would get his head bigger.. :D )

Alexav, we have plenty of tropical fruits.. make your list, and i will send you some :D ;)
BTW, how about my other fruits.. any suggestion ???

The only item on your list that I am not familiar with is Nata De Coco. What the heck is that? If it is anything like cocoa beans, then no, they wouldn't be good for your dogs but everything else is OK to the best of my knowledge...

Wow, I'd love a fruity care package but I don't know if you can send fruit through customs? I know it's a big deal in Florida and California.

Nata de coco is not a real fruit.
it is made from young coconut water developed with some kind of bacteria it will turn to a white solid shape kind of jelly.
Usually it cut into 1cmx1cm cubes and mixed with fruit cocktail.
