Underweight?

Hi all,

Baxter is at 5 months and weights 37.5 pounds. He eats well (Flint River Ranch) and gets plenty of goodies in between.

Is 37.5 'normal' at this age?

Thanks!

It really depends on the dog's size, his build, bone, etc. You should be able to easily feel his ribs, but his spine should not be sticking up, and you should be able to feel his hip points, but they should not be overtly sticking out.

He does sound a bit light, but again, it could just be his bloodline. If you're overly concerned, I'd take him to the vet and ask about worms, thyroid and diabetes.

Harley was 19 weeks old when I got him, and he only weighed 41 lbs. I found out later that he had hook worms (which we treated), but I have no idea it that affected his weight.

He was last weighed at 9 1/2 months old and weighed 67.7 lbs. I think he's a little on the small side compared to a lot of people's male rotties, but he's very healthy now, and he's within the height standard. He just turned 11 months old and is 24 1/2" tall. I don't know how much he weighs though.:)

Remember that this breed continues to grow and fill out until age two and sometimes three. Slow and steady growth is much easier on their joints. My Daisy was so small as a puppy that at 5, 6, 7 months we called her our "pocket Rottie" and wondered if she was a teacup-Rottie. She grew slowly and steadily and grew and grew some more. Now at 30 months, she is 27" tall and almost 90 pounds. :p :D

I adopted Ben at 10 months old. He weighed about 75 pounds. he is now almost 4 yrs old (4/16/99) and weighs about 85 pounds. In the summer when we're out alot and exercising more, he drops a few pounds...but usually stays between 82-85. he's 25 inchs tall at the shoulder and 11 inches wide at the chest (measured right across his 'bowtie' markings). He's not big, but he's not small...I guess you could say he's just right :D !

I recently helped our local shelter place a litter of rott mix pups. Momma dog was probably about 80 pounds, babies were between 12-15 pounds at 9 weeks old. We think Dad was a GSD or something...but pups all had rottie markings (mahogany areas were more a light brown...)...and definitely had rott personalities!
