| As soon as there's nail growth past the quick (which usually happens before birth) you can start cutting. In other words, there's no "right age", it's never too early, and the sooner they get used to the idea, the better (immediately after birth isn't even too early, since many puppies are born with sharp little nails). I'd start as soon as the puppy's settled in (just be extra careful to make it a fun and non-scary experience, take it very slowly and gently, even one nail a day is fine, and use lots of treats and praise, and do your best not to nick the quick - remember, this is the easiest time to start training your dog to be easy to deal with when she's older, and if she learns right away that nail clipping is no big deal AND she gets a cuddle and a cookie out of it, so much the better). Make sure that you have the right kind of clipper, the guillotine type may work for a young puppy, but you'll need a pliers-type for when she's older, so you may as well get a pliers-type now. Enjoy her when you get her, you must be so excited! :) |
