Food ? Seeking Insight, currently feeding Wellness

Hello Everyone!

I am in a food dilemma and am looking for a bit of insight! I have had my Sam for about 4 mo. We rescued him from a pretty bad situation. He was very thin when we got him, but his coat was very shiny. We started him out on Science Diet because that's what we were feeding our Lab. The S.D. immediately caused red eyes and terrible dandruff. I started researching foods and discovered the politics and varying opinions on dog food I never new existed! I heard about Wellness and I've had Sam on that for the past couple of months and he is doing wonderful -- gorgeous, shiny black coat, beautiful white eyes and firmer stools. Clearly he does beautifully on it. My problem is that only a couple of stores carry it in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro and none are at all convenient and often run out. I see you all love Canidae, the cat food is available here, but I've yet to find dog food. Just curious what other foods are popular for Rotties? My Lab thrives on Nutro and almost anything. My Rottie, on the other hand is much for food sensitive. I've seen posts on Diamond food -- is that a Sam's Club brand? Do any of you feed Nutro Lamb and Rice?

We no longer feed Science Diet. I read an article recently that said the reason the vet's promote and carry Science Diet so frequently is due to the kick-backs they get from the company in the form of trips, etc... I can't remember where I read it, and of course that might be incorrect. My dog's don't do that well on it and that's reason enough for me to not feed it

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Laura

It would be a shame for you to switch from a food that the dog is doing so well on...

I've not fed Wellness, but I did feed a food that was availble by DELIVERY ONLY for 7 years. Yes, it was inconvenient and there were a couple of times that I failed to order prior to running out (and one time the damn UPS strike affected the delivery) I even ordered 6 60# barrels each time and yes.....still ran out a couple of times!

But....... the food was WELL WORTH the inconvenience and it made me even more "detail oriented" :D because after running out......I payed more attention and didn't procrastinate on ordering.

Why not buy 2 large bags each time you buy the Wellness? When you open the 2nd bag..... go, without fail, to buy 2 more bags the FIRST SATURDAY after opening it :)

Where there is a will......there is always, ALWAYS a way.

I have to drive almost an hour away. I buy a minimum of 2 bags and a max of 3. When I get down to a half a bag I make another food run. As WorkinDogz says, it is worth the effort to feed your dog a food that it thrives on. Oh yeah, I also feed Wellness. I switch back and forth between the Chicken and the Lamb ( the Fish wasn't a big hit around here LOL).

I agree that it would be a shame to switch foods if your dog is really doing well on it. I also feed the wellness and it is pretty good. Gretchen had major shedding, which has now calmed down quite a bit on wellness and fatty acid supplement.

Ditto...if he's doing really well on it, do what you can to keep it in stock!
I feed a raw diet and sometimes go to ridiculous legnths to go get extra good stuff for my dogs...I drive an hour to get organic rabbits, and belong to a food co-op here for raw feeders so I can get clean green tripe and organically raised goats.

Way back when I fed kibble, Science Death always gave my dogs the runs and gas...Canidae was a huge improvement, and it sure seems to work for lots of people, but not every dog thrives on that either...I'd make the extra effort to get Wellness for Sam. :)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! (Especially when it's running so well!) :D I'd do the same as everyone else, make a day of it, enjoy the scenery, and come home with an extra bag or two! Once you open that last bag, time to call ahead and have them place an order for you, so you never run out. ;)
