What veggies to feed

Last night I was making this increadible veggie soup (weight watchers) and Peanut and Sam were at my feet the whole time. I was sharing carrots, and squash with them. Then it came time to cut up the celery, I didn't think I should give them it because of the strings. But some fell on the floor and they loved it. So I shared that with them too. All of it was cut up in small peices, and it sounded like they chewed it up pretty good.

My question: are there any veggies/fruits that I shouldn't give them? And how do I get Sadie to eat them, she pretty much refuses to eat veggies, likes fruit though. It reminds me of when my daughter was an infant and we tried new foods and she didn't like them. Oh the faces she would make.....to funny.:D

I know onions when raw are thought to cause hemolytic anemia.

I think tomatoes do something.....something with inflammation...(I think)

Raw rhubarb...poisonous for us too!

Raw potatoes

some types of nuts

I'm sure theres more!!!

I heard Onion is not good for dogs whether it is raw or cooked.

I read Grapes and raisin are not good if the dogs consume in large amount.

Sometimes I give my dogs cooked veggie such as carrots, cauli flowers, potatoes, and tofu as the mixture with their dogfood.

And also sometimes I give raw carrots, tomatoes, mango, banana, and orange for them.

Are those too much??

I stick to root veggies (carrots, potatoes) and non-acidic fruits like bannanas. Parker loves them, they're a low-cal treat and unless you give them in huge amounts, won't rock the balance of the diet.

I just use them as a treat - not a meal. :)

Thank you everyone. I was giving them grapes during the summer months, not alot, but now I wonder if it was hurting them. Kind of scary. Anyways, it was pretty cute the way they were eating the veggies. Peanut just loves the raw carrots. I think it has something to do with the crunch. I think I may just cut some up and leave them in the fridge for snack time. Thanks again.:)

Try giving Sadie cooked carrots. Tinkerbell would choose a cooked carrot over any other treat. I once offered her a choice of hot dog or cooked carrot and she chose the carrot.:) Giving her the cooked carrots seemed to whet her appetite for the raw ones.

I think it's great there's so many of you adding fresh food, like the vegetables/fruits to your dog's diets. I wanted to add that moderation is the key when feeding these items though. Starchy vegetables convert to sugar, so if weight is an issue, or the dog is prone to 'yeasty' ears or feet, I'd suggest limiting their use, or avoiding them altogether. The most 'popular' culprits are corn, carrots, potatoes and peas; and they're also the favorites!

My Thunder just recently acquired a taste for broccoli. He just takes one of those "trees" (after doing something for it of course) and runs off like it's a piece of meat to his mat to eat.:D

Our vet suggested that we feed Blade vegetables. So he gets a cup of mixed vegetables with every meal. It's good for him and we were told that it would add on years to his life. He loves them more than treats. I also give him an apple for lunch.

The only things I heard not to feed them were "stinky" vegetables: onions, radishes, etc. Blade loves green pepper and cooked potatoes the most. He goes crazy though for cantaloupe as well. I feed him tomatoes in moderation, he gets one or two grapes just because he likes them but I did hear that in large quantities, grapes and raisins are bad.

Just a note to add... for those of us who feed a raw diet we know that when it comes time to feed the veggies that they must be chopped up almost to a pulp otherwise the dog does not get any of the nutrients inside these veggies... Apparently the dog's digestive system can not break thru the cellose (sp?) cell wall and the veggie will travel right in one end and out the other... I've seen that to be true w/ carrots... they show up in the yard!!! So if you truly want your dog to enjoy the value you in veggies... send them thru a food processor first until they are almost like mush! I'm not sure if this holds true for fruits as well....

I did not know that. I was wondering what the orange stuff in the poop was. Didn't put 2n2 together. I called the vet, and they just said watch them, I didn't see it again so dismissed it. hehehehe. Now is that with all the veggies or just the crunchy ones?

I'm no expert by any means... but if it's already a mushy consistancy I wouldn't think you'd have to process it... but most veggies that I can think of are hard... The only soft veggie I can think of is a tomatoe... or something that is VERY ripe...

I still give my dogs a hard carrot for something to do... but I know it's like crunching on ice... goes right thru them...
