from canidae to solid gold

just got back.:) i am switching from canidae to solid gold-holystic diet. i'm going to give it a shot. there is a health food store nearby and the only dog food product they carry is solid gold. now i won't have to pay for shipping of canidae or make the 2 hour drive when i really really need some food. i think he'll do fine on it. i'll update if anything happens. btw-dungeon is doing great after his surgery(neuter) and he's gained the weight back. also, his ilp # finally came in. :D -kevin

Are you speaking of Holistique Blendz? That's their "vegetarian" food. You'd have to add a lot of meat to get that up to the stature of Canidae.

If you feel you must try something by Solid Gold, try the Mmillenia Beef and Barley. Personally though, I think anything made by Solid Gold has too much grain, particularly for a growing puppy.

I think alot of dogs just plain don't like it. My Ruby grew up on it and she hated it.

Butkus(my 3 year old male) loves Solid Gold! When I swithced from Eukanuba to Solid Gold it was like I gave him what he has always wanted. He hated Eukanuba(now I understand why..). The last few days he would not even eat it at all!

I used Eagle Adult (Blue bag) for many years and tried out Canidae more than a year ago, and found that coat and skin condition greatly improved. We also do not have to feed that much and the dogs' body mass remain consistent. I had always mixed the kibble with some chicken or meat broth.

However the distributor in my country stop importing because he claimed that there was some availability problem. I then switch to Solid Gold (Standard Gold bag), and the dogs have no problem switching and the coat and body masses are equally excellent. I continue to give cooked beef together with the broth. For the puppy, I give two extra meal of just kibble. I thnk the quality of Canidae and Solid Gold (standard H&K) are equally good.

Please pay attention as most Solid gold products require that you purchase an add their supplements in order for them to be complete.

I've been paying attention to this thread and after reading Judi's post figured I should jump in. I have feed the mmeillenia for a few months now after feeding the HundenFlocken (sp). I have been very happy with the product. I scoured the site looking for a suggestion that a supplement would be needed to make the diet complete and the only diet I found that on was the Holistique blend which is a vegetarian diet. PLEASE advise me if there is something that I've missed. I spent weeks consulting nutritional guides, reading books on canine nutrition and talking with raw feeders here as that was the direction I was turning in. I have included a copy of the ingredients and am not seeing a large amount of grains, or any defficiencies in the guaranteed Analysis which AAFCO would require to make a nutritionally compete meal.
I've also included the solid gold site!

It has been some time since I used Solid Gold so it may have been reformulated, but I recall a more recent post from a current user who said that this was still true for some of the products. I know we used to have to add sea meal for complete nutrition. Just something to check on.

Memory is very fuzzy, but wasn't it something they wanted you to buy separate because the baking process would ruin it.

I believe that was the rationale behind the addition of the supplements. I know when I first found out about it I was a bit surprised. Perhaps that has changed.

Well I bit the bullet and sent an e-mail over to solid gold asking about the additional supplementation. I will advise you when they respond.

Well here we go....I'd love some input on what to make of this

All our foods
are nutritionally balanced and complete according to AAFCO guidelines. The
baking process does not allow for digestive enzymes to be included in the
dry food. This is why we recommend supplementing with Seameal. It contains
digestive enzymes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and flaxseed meal.

Regards
Solid Gold
