what is a dremel tool?

I just had a horrible experience with my 10 month old pup. I was cutting his nails and he moved wrong and I got the quick. I got the bleeding stopped but not before it was all over me and the white carpet. I was so upset at hurting him that I vowed that he would only get his nails cut at the vet. The thing is he only goes in about once a year for shots. Even with all the walking he does on concrete he still has long nails. I love the idea of being able to shorten them without the risk of the quick.

It's a little grinder... you can get at hardware & craft stores. Handy thing to have, you can get tons of attachments for it. My dogs are all OK with clipping (you are brave to do it on a white carpet!) But I know a lot of people swear by the Dremel for that.

It is a Godsend. I highly recommend getting one.

Once you use a dremel, you can never go back!;)

whitney, you are absolutely right. I just bought one a month or so ago.

I got a mini mite cordless for just $25, and threw those nasty old clippers away:D

Please try the dremmel. The cordless version ($24 @ Walmart) works great. Introduce your dog to it gradually and don't try to trim nails right away. Show it to him, touch his nails with it, then turn it on to let him hear it. (Mine likes to lick it too...when it's off, of course!) You might be able to only get a couple of nails done the first time but the patience is well worth it. Mine will actually go to sleep sometimes when I trim his nails! But then again, he's kinda weird 'cause he likes me to use the shop vac on his coat. Good luck! Joe

dremmel use...

Just a thought, just because you use a dremmel doesn't mean you can't still cut the quick. I don't think going to a dremmel is less risky, just quicker...
Of course, I have yet to get my girl, so I'm just speaking my two cents.

The Dremmel tool is great for doing their nails. Reno used to completely freak out when I had to clip his nails. He got so bad that the vet recommended tranquilizing him.
I found this website Dober Dawn a few years ago with instructions on how to do it, bought a Dremel tool and it worked great! After acclimating him to the Dremel, Reno would just completely relax and let me do his toes without any problems at all. Much less stressful for both of us.

The dremel is a great thing, but risk is a factor - DO NOT wear a necklace while doing this to your dog. I almost choked myself when inadvertently I somehow must have leaned in and down too much and my chain got caught in the dremel and it whirled around the dremel almost choking me. It happened so fast, I couldn't get to the switch but thank God the chain broke. I had part of it on the dremel and a nice choker chain around my neck, with what seemed to have no end (it had twisted so much)
I laughed about it later as we're trying to unravel the chain from my neck, saying ok, here's something to put down on what NOT to do. Remember safety first, just thought I might mention what could happen.

I got a nice lick from my dog making sure I was ok :D
