Prescription diet advice please!!

Please see my post in the vet forum. The title is "Not Cushing's Disease, but..." I have a question about different brands of prescription diets.

Thanks-

Jaime

One place you could ask this question is K9Nutrition at NO SPAMMING. It is a very active list, and people there are often pretty knowlegable....most feed raw or homecooked, but not exclusively. It's run by Lew Olsen, who owns & breeds Rottweilers and has some sort of degree in canine nutrition. You will definitely get some helpful advice there.

After almost 3 years of feeding raw to my dogs I cannot imagine feeding Science Diet - but if it was the only way to help my dog, I would. Just FYI - I had two vets tell me I ought to put Phoebe (very old GSDx) on r/x diet for failing kidneys. That was right after I switched to raw from Canidae - I did some reading and decided I would stick with what I was doing. It serems to have worked - she's still very much alive, and her bloodwork has shown some improvement and then been stable.

I think you are doing the right thing by researching, there are a number of books on canine diets, you could check dogwise.com. Whole Dog Journal did a very thorough article on a number of rx dogfoods a month or two ago, see if you can get a copy. They have a website; don't accept advertising so you have to pay to read whole articles, well worth the subscription price, though.

Best of luck, hope you get Misha well.

I agree. Do the research. A lot of these "prescription" foods by Science Diet, Iams, etc...are an attempt to sell inferior quality food for a premium price.

There is a ton of info on the net. I wish you the best. Get two or three opinions after you've researched nutrition options.
