Very Thick,wavy coat?????????

I have 3 dogs,2 Rotties Brother and sister,Leah and Baron and a dobe...Leah has grown the" fullest" coat recently, and her hair looks wavy,I mean WHEN SHE LAYS DOWN ,SHE GETS UP WITH HER COAT PARTED!!! she really looks shaggy...What is going on?????I know winter is coming, but why don't Baron and Moriah know that???Leah must have a secret.... if it's gonna' be that cold, the others better do some fast growing of coats..and I better get mine out...Why,do any of you know would her coat get so thick and wavy...she had a beautiful coat always, she is still shinny, but I'm concerned at this new shaggy look....

my pup has a wavy, course, and relatively thick thick coat as well. before i decided to buy him, i checked him out and his mother and half brother were on the premisis. i don't recall them having the same kind of coat...theirs were thinner, straight, and velvety soft like i thought rotties were "supposed" to be. i figured it was just his "baby" coat and, with all the shedding that's been going on, that the "adult" coat would follow soon. granted, i saw them in mid july when the weather was a lot warmer...i have no idea what their coats are like now.

Thanks Jae,but no puppy hair here :) this girl is past 2years..always had the same coat, straight and shinny, very pretty, until this fall, maybe a month now,she has got so thick,it's unbelieveable,I've had other dogs,my Last being a female Rottie who died at 6yr. from bone cancer, she was my baby, anyway she never went through this,Leah's brother Baron, out of the same liter,is still normal, glossy, parents also, this is like a freak thing,of all my Dogs and Breeds this is the biggest coat I've ever seen,Looks like when I first get out of bed,but hers is all over......It's not shedding either.....really strange!!!!

That is odd, you'd think at her age her coat wouldn't change.
I have a long haired Rottweiler, very thick and shaggy coat! :)
I actually think it looks really handsome except the fur on his ears is always sticking up all over the place, he has a permanent bad hair day. And it's a very impractical coat...very fine, he picks up burrs and junk in his fur on walks, takes forever to dry, and I have to brush him frequently so it doesn't get matted.

That is curious about your Leah, though. How long is it, dos she have feathering on her legs or anything?

carina, thanks for your concern, seems no one else is interested in helping, I appreciate you...:) Leah has no feathering on legs or even ears, just her body!!!! bad hair day is right, her hair parts and undercoat is showing, really wish she didn't get it,but if it's not a complication from body chemistry, hormones etc..(She has been spayed since 4mo.) I will accept it and love her just the same,I may check with the vet. just to see if it could be a compromised(sp) system of some sort,if it had always been,I would not be concerned, but after this long, makes me wonder, her hair isn't long just standing up with curl...where it used to lay down close to her body, very black,no brown showing.....so goofy!!!! Maybe we need to get them some mousse' and slick 'em down...:p

I know some breeds are known for having radical coat changes some time after altering (Cavaliers in particular are known for developing thicker, coarser, wavier coats after altering). I haven't heard of this in Rotties, but... I would ask the vet about it, myself, since some disorders have coat changes as a symptom (not usually the way you describe, so don't panic, but it can't hurt to ask). You could have her clipped if you wanted to.

Well that is weird, spidey has a point...maybe your vet would be a person to ask? I had Cooper clipped short this summer. I hated it, he looked like a goat! But my best friend has his litter-sister, also long haired..she keeps Misha clipped all the time. She looks like a "normal" Rottweiler.
Cooper loooves girl dogs, he would probably take a fancy to Leah!
Let us know if you find out anything about her coat change...

Thanks again carina and Spidey,I will call my vet tomorrow and if I can talk to him ,pose the question,I know in people hair changes are a bad thing..ie,superflous hair/hirsutism,(abnormal hariness) but usually it is from meds, and "Chemo" can cause loss then grows in different structures(straight to curly etc.)...but she is on nothing, eats Canidae...appears healthy,I'm afraid she'd look like a goat too,:) she might like to meet mr. cooper!!!! ;)

I don't know anything about what caused this change in hair or I would help. No clue here.

Any major changes since her last moult? Our B'Elana had TPO surgery in May last year and recovered well, except that the back of her left thigh remained totally, and I mean totally - not even a hint of fuzz, bald. Then, when the autumn moult was underway, all the fur grew back in a matter of weeks... Go figure...

That is weird!
My shaggy one loves cold weather...he's very happy outside lying in the snow with the temperature in the 'teens. He loves winter.
