Getting rid of the smell from expressing anal glands

Balder expressed his anal glands the other day, and while I cleaned his fur up well, I can still smell the lingering odor which I don't enjoy. Is there an easy way without a full bath to get rid of the smell?

Try saturating the area with vinegar & water, a 50/50 mix.

I am sure something like Natures Miracle would work, but I don't know how good it would be for himn to lick it off...

What's the big deal about giving a bath? These coats are easy to bath and dry, not like a Pyr or something that takes hours under the dryer.

Leah as you say expresses anal glands now and then, aaahemm,as I was sleeping the other night, butt toward me,never at night before,I used alittle shampoo of mine, and rinsed"Just the area"made a nice lather, why not a bath?????any vet will tell you or should that baths take away necessary oils in the skin, brush regularly and the dog will stay clean,really...it's not that it is a time consuming chore to bathe,it's just not the best thing....

They have dog bath wipes, I found them at Wal-Mart, now I can't remember the name. If I remember I'll find out for you tonight. It was in the pet section, and they are like baby wipes for dogs. Nice scent and does the job, I use them for spot cleaning. My guy is a huge 150 lb rescue, lost 7 lbs so far :D, but he looks leaner and you can see ribs, he's just big, and taking a bath all the time is not an option.

Thanks all

Thanks for the ideas all, we got rid of the smell. I had just bathed him two days before and really I was being lazy and not wanting to bathe him again. ;)

We use this fresh spray stuff at the vets. I will try to get the exact name but I bet your vets office has stuff similiar. Whenever we empty glands in the office we spray (we call it foo foo spray) on the butt and walla no bad smell.

Sorry it took me so long but I finally remembered. Here's what I got at Wal-Mart, it's called

OUT! Bathing Wipes for Dogs.
"Washes away mud, dirt, dander, food and odor" "gentle alcohol free formula contains vitamin A, E Lanolin and Aloe, for complete bathing and in-between touchups".

The main thing to keep in mind with anal glands is that it is an oil base - which is why alcohol, vinegar & water, etc. work so well. ;) Same thing with Skunk smell - it takes something that can cut through the oil.
