| Canine Nutrition Seminar For anyone who lives in the Toronto area, Monica Segal is going to have a day-long seminar on canine nutrition on Sunday, October 20 in Markham, just east of Toronto. She is supposed to be excellent. When I took Dresden to the ortho specialist, I asked at the clinic if they had a veterinary nutritionist on staff. They didn't, but they highly recommended Monica Segal. I haven't read her book yet, but I've seen it recommended so often on some other lists I belong to that I figured this would be a worthwhile seminar. You can get the info at www.foxfirepublishing.com Just click on "Monica Segal - Your Dog's Diet" seminar when you get to the page. There is a page of questions you send in with your registration that asks how you are currently feeding your dog. Apparently the seminar is going to be customized to address the diets (of the dogs, that is) and concerns of the participants. I'm sending in my registration tomorrow. If anyone from the board is going to go, let me know and maybe we can meet up and introduce ourselves there. :) |

| Ooh. I'm near Detroit - not terribly far. I may go, that looks interesting! I've heard of her, never read her book though. I'll let you know if I do.

| the info here and on her seminar page does not give me enough to be able to decide if I would attend or not. What diet and feeding methods does she advocate? |

| I haven't read her book, but people who have tell me that she is not stuck on any one particular diet. I asked someone on another list who owns the book what Segal's opinions were of the different diets around today. Here is what she answered me. "What I like about Monica's views is that one diet does not suit all dogs...and how true! I own many dogs and they are all so different. I like the BARF diet. I like a combination of raw/cooked. I like all-cooked. The different diets suit my 16 different dogs..and this I find in Monicas book ..great reading!" I will be buying a copy of the book at the seminar, but I've heard enough good things about her to want to hear her speak. It sounds like her philosophy is right down my alley; point out the pros and cons of all diets (because none is perfect) and let the owner make an educated decision based on their own dog's needs. |

| ah, thanks Caroline, for the clarification. It's not something I would be interested in since I am a raw feeder for the last 7 years or so and have no plans to change. |

| I'm also a pretty comitted raw feeder, but I'm open to hearing theory on any alternative to kibble feeding, just to learn something new & stay open minded.

| If anything new and enlightening should come out of the seminar, I'll post about it. :) I'm pretty firm on my choice to feed home-cooked, but I'm always interested in the latest nutritional findings in case there's some way to improve on what I do. Since the seminar is going to be based on the attendees questions and concerns, I'm hoping there will be some discussion on dogs with food allergies and on diseases that can be helped by nutrition. |
