Science Diet??

We feed both Brodie and our 2 cats (Lotus and Baxter) Science Diet. Just want to know what are peoples opinions about Science Diet as opposed to Nutro or Canidea(sp?). If you think they are better than Science Diet and why? I'd never fed any of my animals anything other than mainstream grocery store brands(i.e. Kibbles and Bits, Meow Mix, etc.) until I got married last year and Science Diet is what my husband fed his cat Lotus. And before we go bashing grocery store brands, they can't be all that bad because my Husky who is 12 and the 2 cats that are at my parents, and that I mostly grew up with, are 17 and 15yrs. old and all they've ever eaten is mainstream grocery brands.

Well, to be honest, Sciane Diet is poop food, Iams & Eukaneuba are a little better, and Nutro natural Choice better still. Canidae, Wellness, Flint River Ranch and a host of other foods recommended by other forum members will far outweigh Science Diet in nutritional value per 1 cup of food.

Have you compared ingredients in Science Diet to any other foods? YES, it's sold by vets, but most vets get a kickback from the company for selling the stuff - of course the vet will tell you to feed it!

I always tell people to feed the best food you can afford - research the forums for food related threads - there are a TON of great food sites listed in some of them.

While I will never 'trash' a grocery store brand - BUT - if you feed a dog, for example, 6 cups a day of 'grocery store brand X' food, versus 6 cups per day Canidae or another premiuim food, I guarantee you'll see less 'garbage out' from Canidae. WHY - less garbage goes INTO the dog - less fillers and other non-essential crapola (like chemicals!) in the Canidae!! The widely available (AKA supermarket available) food trash themselves with their ingredient labels!!

Good luck!

I believe for a 20lb. bag of Science Diet we paid roughly $20 (sure doesn't last long with the way Brodie eats LOL). He gets 2.5 cups twice a day of the Large Breed Puppy formula. On average how much would a bag of the same size of one of the higher quality food cost? We can't afford to be spending more than $20-$25 every 2 to 3 weeks on a bag of dog food, our budget just won't stretch that far right now. Are there any other higher quality brands that are around the same price as Science Diet? All input will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance-

Jaime

Hello, I was feeding my malamute pup california natural which is supose to be a very good quality dog food but he kept vomitting and had constant bouts of diahrea so I had to change him back to Eukanuba about a month later and all of that disapeared. My rottie on the other hand does great on California natural and my seventeen year old siberian/samoyed mix does wonderful on senior formula Nutro natural choice so in the end it just depends on what your dog does best on and tolerates as far as digestion goes.:) The Eukanuba and Nutro natural choice run about the same price $20.00 dollars for a twenty pound bag and the california natural which I've only found at small pet supply stores around here runs $36.00 for a 36 lb. bag. I feed about four cups of the california natural to my 100 lb. rottie each day and the pup gets five cups of the Eukanuba puppy formula a day and he is sixty pounds. So the amounts you feed seem to be about the same as for science diet or any of the super premium brands as well.

My advice is to feed the best you can afford and what your pets seem to do good on.:)

How old is Brodie?? You don't want to feed puppy food too much after the pup reaches 8-10 months of age - start weaning onto adult formulas at about that age...

With a higher quality food you'll feed LESS of it - you do not have to give alot of food to get the nutrients.

I was feeding Pedigree as one of our dogs had a soy allergy. We did ALOT of research on food before we adopted our two rotties, and decided to feed Sensible Choice Natural Blend by Royal Canin (available at PetCo). It is about $33 per 30 pound bag, but NO preservatives & has all natural human grade ingredients.

I'll admit it, I've tasted it - if I was stuck on a desert island with nothing but a bag of this food, I'd eat it!

We were feeding SIX cups of Pedigree per day (3 in the morning, 3 at night) and you can imagine the amount of poop we were picking up! We now feed 1.5 cups 2 times a day (3 cups total) and the dogs are much healthier looking and less poop! Coats are nice and shiny (dull and flaky on Pedigree) and they are all around better off for the food switch.

I have five dogs here, and a 30 pound bag of food lasts me about 15 days. At PetCo they have a program where if you buy 10 bags of food you get one free...works for me!!

I feed my rescue foster dogs Nutro Natural Choice - no complaints from them!!

What you can afford to feed your dogs and what you feed your dogs is most for sure your business but please research!

I pay 31.95 for 40 pounds of Canidae I was paying 36 for 40 pounds of Science diet. I can feed my dog half as much of Canidae as I can science diet.

Yes I have older dogs that have lived forever on junk food...(read my signature)...... but what you have to take in consideration is what market store name brands are junk food now were not always junk food. Read The lables of Iams, Eukanuba, and Purina products 10 years ago and read what they are now....... ;)

feed what you can but always research!!!!!

Brodie is betweenn 8-10 months. the vet the AC took him to said 8 and our vet said 10, so we're gonna say that he's 9 months :p .
I think that we are going to give Nutro a try with Brodie. He's almost done with his current bag of Science Diet, so I think we will buy another smaller bag of Science Diet and a 40 of Nutro Adult Formula to start to mix in and get him switched over and see how things go from there!! I really appreciate all of the responses to my questions about this. Afterall, all I want is what's best for my pup, and if Nutro is better than the other food than thats what he'll get. Now i need to find out if they make cat food and get Baxter and Lotus switched over.lol

Thanks everybody!!!

Jaime

How much to feed?

Stopped at Petsmart on the way home and picked up some Nutro for Large Breed Adults. Mixed some in with his Science Diet, so we're on our way to better nutrition. One question though, when we do get him fully switched over how much should we feed him a day? Right now he get's 2.5 cups twice a day of the Science Diet. I'm not sure what he weights right now, I'll find out tomorrow when he goes to the vet for his second round of boosters. But, last Monday he weighted 57lbs. and our vet said that he would like to see him more at about 65lbs. to 70lbs. for his age(9 months) and stature. The bag of Nutro says to feed 4.25 to 5.25 cups per day. Should I just follow the guidelines on the bag of Nutro?

Thanks in advance-

Jaime

gained 11 lbs.!!!

Well, took Brodie to the vet and he now weights 68 lbs. He's gained 11lbs in 2 weeks. I guess that's what a regular diet and exercise will do for you. Tomorrow it will be three weeks since we've picked him up from the shelter. Boy, time flies.lol

I believe there is Nutro Cat Food - check the place where you got the dog food - I'm fairly certain PetCo has Nutro cat food.

I also think Natures Recipe makes a fairly decent cat food - available at PetCo.

Good Luck!

When I fed kibble, I was feeding my dogs Nutro Natural Choice. It worked fine for them.
However we have switched to barf and I have been feeding that for almost a year now.
I have always fed my cats science diet. Recently I tried switching the cats over to Nutro Natural Choice cat food. I read the label & the ingredients looked much better than SD. However, the poop stinks so bad now! I can't take the smell and I went out yesterday & bought another bag of SD for them.
I know SD isn't the best food..but it works well for them.

I guess we'll just have to give it a try with the cats. They still have quite a bit of SD to go through so they won't be switched for a couple weeks yet.If Nutro has the same effect as it did for your cats then I guess ours will go back to SD like you did.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Granted we don't measure out food to our dogs - we just fill the bowl and they eat what they want, and have maintained healthy weights for years now - but they are eating MORE of the Canidae than they did the Science Diet.
And our cats don't seem to be taking very well to the Felidae...

i feed the nutro cat formula for urinary blockage prevention....same as the special care formula, or UD science diet, only I think that the nutro is better nutrition for my cat than UD, or Special care .......
food for thought!
My cats love it!
