MAL said "Granted we don't measure out food to our dogs - we just fill the bowl and they eat what they want, and have maintained healthy weights for years now - but they are eating MORE of the Canidae than they did the Science Diet. "

MAL - I've heard that a lot of dogs like the taste of Canidae better than other kibbles, and I don't know about your dog, but if you put something yummy in my girl's bowl she'll eat as much as you give her. Maybe you should try measuring out however much the Canidae package says to feed and only let your dogs eat what they need. That way you can keep them on the better food and still have the bag last longer so you're not running out too often to get a new bag! It's definitely cheaper to feed Canidae than Science Diet - the 40 lb bags cost the same, but dogs don't need to eat as much Canidae as they would have to eat of Science Diet to get the nutrition they need! Just a thought!:)

Strangely enough, our rottie cross is the one eating more yet he is starting to look a bit thinner to me. Right now there's no way I'd want to cut back on his intake. At around 120 pounds, he maybe eats 3 cups/day, while our lab/chessie at 70 pounds only eats about 1 to 1.5 cups/day.

I totally agree! Just read the list of ingredients and it's obvious. With Science Diet you're paying for marketing and supporting a bunch of vet students through school. While that could be considered a worthy cause, I'll direct my charity money through other places. :)
Right now, I feed mostly Nutro Natural Choice because of quality, cost, and availability. At about 0.70/pound, it's about half the price of the super premium foods like Innova and Wellness, it's almost as good, and I don't have to drive to a specialty store to find it. No, it's not made from organically grown chicken and steroid-free lamb, but my own diet doesn't go to those extremes either.

MAL;
If your dog is looking thin eating 3 cups feed him more:) A dog that weighs 120 lbs should eat at least 4 cups, if he is active even more. I think that if you think he is too thin then you should feed him more for as long as it take for him to look less thin.
I have had many foster dogs come in that need to gain 5-10 pounds, I usually feed 3 meals per day and feed more and within 2-3 weeks the dogs start to fill out. Once they are the perfect weight you cut down by a cup.
