Nutro Natural Choice??

I've been watching this forum for a while but have not seen any mention of Nutro Natural Choice dog foods. My other dogs seemed to thrive on it and lived longer than normal lives. Many here have good things to say about Canidae, what type of outlet would carry this product. I am not opposed to going to specialty stores to get good food.

Hi, Tilerspop! There is a thread called - "I can't find Canidae, but..." Look there for ideas on where to find Canidae. I'm pretty sure that people are going to tell you that there are much better foods than Nutro out there - they are right!:)

kibble

I have had people tell me that they are not able to even afford Nutro, however I have priced Purina products and found that 40 pounds of that would cost 24 dollars, and for 4 more you can have nutro natural choice, which is by far better than the grocery store kibbles.....
just food for thought...

There are better foods out there like Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, and Canidae to name a few, but you usually pay a lot more for them (usually around $1.33/lb). At about 0.70/lb, I think Nutro NC is a very good deal, and it's more readily available than the other foods I mentioned. I don't think there's a better "mass market" food out there. You can do better, but you usually have to pay a lot more depending on where you live.

If you go with the Nutro natural it is Ok, There is a thread in the archives about cancerous products in some foods, and the other nutro was listed, but the natural brand was not

You can do a lot worse than Nutro Natural Choice. Of the readily available choices found in the large chain pet stores (Petco, PetSmart), I think it's the best pick. I fed Nutro Natural Choice for awhile before I became aware of Canidae, and I still think it's a pretty good food.

Thanks for all the replys, I went to the Canidae website and found that there are 53 outlets for Canidae here in the Denver area. One was my old food supplier before he quit handling what I was using at the time. Unfortunately he also had quit carrying Canidae. Never fear there was another dealer the same distance away in the opposite direction. Tiler still won't eat the dry food, but he will eat the canned. As soon as we get past the respiratory infection, he will learn to eat dry Canidae!

Mine eats Nutro and loves it...that is the best quality that we have around here.

So, I have no complaints about it!;)

Thanks for the info!

By the way Golden Mill no longer carries Canidae, and hasn't for two years. They say they don't know why they are still listed on the website. I've been getting it at a pet store nearby, they carry both the canned and dry foods. I just wish Tiler would make the transition from canned to dry a little faster.

Thanks Again

My 13 month old bitch eats Nutro large breed and loves it. I switched to Wellness for 1 month because I thought Wellness was soo much better and she would eat it and puke it up about 2 hours later, and yes I switched her the right way. What I'm trying to say is if your dog is on the Nutro and is doing good WHY change.

Birdie,

It's not a case of switching foods, Tiler is a rescue that I've had for two weeks last thursday and I wanted to feed him as well as possible.

You mention switching foods the "right way", is there one. I've heard several methods, from putting food down for 20 minutes and picking it up again until they eat, basically starve or eat the new food, to essentially weaning from one to another.

My biggest problem is Tiler will eat canned dog food but won't touch dry. We've been mixing canned and dry and are now up to a 50% mix. :) The canned food is just too expensive to keep him on it:( and I understand the dry is better for him anyway, it certainly is for my wallet:) 1 case of canned costs $28.00USD and lasts 5 - 6 days at 100%, one 40lb bag of dry costs $31.00USD and will last 5 - 6 weeks at 100%.

wheat ridge supplier

We buy from Walker's Quality Cage & Feed on Jellison St, just off W.44th in Wheat Ridge. I used to buy Science Diet from PetSmart, and am paying about the same amount for a 40lb bag of Canidae (somewhere around $32). They're going to move soon, though, so I'd recommend looking up their # for the new address (owner says phone # staying the same).
You could try cutting back on the canned food slowly and mix in more of other flavorful things like meat juices, salad dressing, table scraps, etc with the dry food to wean your dog off the canned.

If you switch foods, you can't do it cold turkey.

You have to do it slowly, by decressing the amount of food over a period of 7-10 days..until the dog is only eating the new food.
