dandruff?

My oldest male Dexter has recently started getting some heavy dandruff (or flaking) over the past 2 months. He's been to the vet and they gave him some omega6 spray, which only works temp. and returns when I stop spraying him. He has been eating Canidae for the past 2 years, however we never have had a shampoo that we have really stuck with. I think it must be the latest shampoo.

Can anyone give me a recommendation for a Super Premium style shampoo?

Thanks in advance.

It's not the skin that's the issue, it's probably the kibble.

As for shampoo, try Johnson's Baby Shampoo [for real kids not the dog variety] OR try "OUT", which is a superior product [I've tried everything else too] and works to create a wonderful hand to the coat, is good smelling and is very inexpensive considering it's a top quality product. I get it at KMart locally.

I really recommend this stuff - it's worked on a show dog I had and a rescue dog I've got now. Both black coats gleamed like wet paint and the dog smells great for at least 2 weeks if you brush daily. <http://www.outinternational.com/proddetl3.htm>

I'd give a new food a try too - and try adding some cod liver oil caps to your dog's feed. The bad coat dandruff is probably something he's eating and Canidae isn't the end all and be all of dog kibbles, you know?

I use the oil I bought from Petsmart that stops shedding and dandruff problems and it makes a huge difference. Also bought shampoo for black dog hair and never had any more problems. I used to think it was the ProPlan he was on and switched to canidae(he likes canidae better) but they say it doesn't matter on food. Try the shampoo an oil and see what happens. How often do you bathe your dog?

Before ditching the Canidae...I'd try adding some flaxseed oil and plain non fat yogurt.

Also try experimenting with some different premium dog shampoos and vigorous, regular brushing and blading (don't over do the shampoo thing, though).

It really is a wonderful kibble and if he's been thriving on it for the last 2 years, my process of elimination would not be the food.

Skin is an outward sign of inward health

I agree that Canidae is a wonderful kibble and we use it here and our dogs love it. I also add a bit of flax oil and herring oil to their diets. It could be that the skin is being irritated by shampoo or shampooing too often. A super, natural rinse, after shampooing is made with rosemary...whole herb, steeped in boiling water til just warm and rubbed into the coat after the shampoo is well rinsed from the coat. You don't rinse out the rosemary. just let dry.
