Oh really?

Well, after posting this we'll be on our way. Yes, Chester is coming with me. We have a coupon for PetCo. for free treats! I'll let him choose... maybe not. And who knows, we just might stop and get him another TX-Double on the way home! I also have half of a Blue Bell Bar for dessert after that. So you tell me: Who is the better Mom?

PS: Just kidding! I love your posts. And yes, I called the store ahead; they have enough for both of our brats.

Rommel's Mom,

What I think is that this food has more grain than meat. Meat may well be first in the list of ingredients but ground rice, rice flour and rice bran are all part of the same thing, rice! If you were to add up the different weights of all these rice parts, I guarantee you would come up with more rice than meat (that is if they told you what the actual weights were, but they don't because they don't want you to catch on). For example, if the food is 35% meat, 30% ground rice, 20% rice flour and 10% rice bran, this gives you 35% meat and 60% rice. This is called ingredient splitting and companies do this to fool you into thinking there is more meat in the product than grain.

I don't know which food this is, but it doesn't sound like a premium food. If this is supposed to be a maintenance food, you could do better.

Oops, I missed your small print. :o It's a large breed puppy food. I think with a food with this much grain, you'd need to feed a lot of it so the puppy got the right amount of protein. Protein from grain isn't very easily assimilated so you need to feed more. When you feed more, you end up feeding more calories running the risk of obesity (pups should be lean, not fat) and feeding more of the supplements in the food, too, like calcium, phophorus, vitamins and mineral. This type of overnutrition can lead to things like pano and more seriously, joint problems.

Large breed foods are a marketing gimmick for owners without the self control to limit meal portions of regular puppy food and to keep their puppy lean. Same as diet dog foods.

Humans are our dogs "Gods" if you will, WE control how much food our dogs eat. WE control how many calories a day they are getting. There should be no need for lower calorie foods (often with more grains to accomplish this) because we should be smart enough to feed less and keep our dogs a healthy lean!

Well, I rarely enter the food thing, but I for sure agree with Diane on this one. ditto for the "light" feeds.

rommels mom-

If you are looking for a kibble to feed your pup, my suggestion would be Canidae. This is an all stage dog kibble, and many of the members here think that it is one of the top kibbles out there. I have had no problems with it and my dogs love it. Canidea has a website you can check out if you are interested.

I also agree with Diane in that large breed puppy foods are just a gimmick. Before Kodi was on Canidea (and before I knew better) I was feeding him a large breed puppy food, lets just say that his stomach didn't agree with the food.... Once on Canidae his "poopy problems" cleared up.

Anyways, there is a lot of info here on nutrition. I am sure that you will have no problem deciding on a kibble to suite your puppies needs.

Good luck! :)
