Vomitting with BARF

...OK - I have a question... I have been feeding my dogs 100% barf for about 2/3 weeks now...

They get a balanced diet (I think) - ground beef mixed with veggies, chicken back, chicken necks, liver, veggies with egg, RMB....(over the course of the week)....

...Every night without fail I can hear my 5 year old male regurgitating his food... it happens at the same time every night - I feed them at 6pm and he regurgitates at around 2am....

I can hear him heaving in the night... what is going on? - he seems to be the only one doing this... is it normal???

I haven't noticed him throwing up after hi AM Feed... I am worried that this is upsetting his stomach!

Anyone experienced anything similar????

is the evening meal the rmb meal? if that's the case his system isn't used to digest bones and he needs help with that. Give him some probiotics to help with digesting (don't know any particular brands, never had to use them myself).
In regards if this is normal or not my answer would be yes and no. It isn't normal because dogs shouldn't be throwing up their food, yet many dogs experience it simply because their system isn't used to the new diet and the adjustment for some dogs is more difficult than others. With some probiotics the problem should go away.

Hi Janet - Has your boy had this problem since you switched? I'm thinking since he's the oldest and had been eating kibble longer then the others, he maybe having some problems breaking down the fats. You can try removing the skin from the chicken, and maybe serve him leaner cuts of meat. I'd use the probiotic no matter what, and consider a digestive enzyme for this guy.

I forgot to ask you, what is it he's vomiting? Not to be offensive, but do you actually see the "contents"? I'm curious after so many hours what he'd be bringing up. Thanks -

Thanks Kathy... ;)

Yes, he only seemed to be doing it since feeding RAW.... and he seems to be the only one vomitting - actually he sleeps downstairs, so at around 2am I can hear him regurgitating his food... with the heaving sound they make... - I do not actually get to see what it is he has brought up - because by the time I have gone down stairs to see what's going on - either he or the others have "cleaned" up for me

I have ordered the Bertes Ultra Probiotic powder for him - (I finally found the e-mail with the details) - is the Ultra Probiotic powder ALSO a digestive enzyme???

....I guess I will have to monitor it and see if he is only vomitting after he has had the chicken backs w/skin... the necks I get don't have skin on them...

I wasn't sure if it was part of the "detox" everyone talks about - or if feeding him raw was making him sick.... - which somehow I don't think is the case... ;)

Vomit

What ever he is throwing up is what is causing the problem. Mine had a problem digesting fats and would without fail hack up a nice stinky pile of chicken fat *P.U.* a couple of hours after eating. Digestive enzymes and probiotics should help. I give probiotics now but haven't settled on a brand of enzymes yet. At the time I was using neither. I just rode it out. I cut most of the fat off the chicken and within 2 weeks everything was fine. Now all I do is thaw, rinse, serve and the last time one of them puked was almost a year ago. Unless they eat too fast, but that will come up right away. ;)

... It could be the skin from the chickdn backs, because he is fine with the ground beef/veggie mix and also with the skinless chicken necks... I may just stick to giving him chicken necks and eliminate the backs altogether...

... don't you just love it?
