Canidae issue to watch for

I, like most people, have saw a lot of info floating around on this site about Canidae. I liked the ingredient list and the protein/fat ratios were okay so I decided to try it based on all the feed back that I read.

I bought (1) bag and fed a dog with decent results knowing that it takes about 3 months for a true evaluation. I then purchased (5) bags and had all three of my dogs on it. After about a month, I noticed that they were losing considerable weight. Since I was feeding the same amount as the prior food and Canidae was supose to be superior, I was concerned. I called the distributer and explained my situatuion and he give me some good info. Canidae is a great food and superior to many, but watch out for the calorie content. I did not do a calorie content comparison before I switched. I am an advocate of Precise dog food and feed mainly the Competition. The ME kcal per cup info was my answer as to why my dogs were losing weight. Canidae has I beleive 465 cal versus the Precise having 575 cal per cup. This 20% decrease in calories explained why my dogs were losing weight while feeding the same amount.

Needless to say, I have now switched back to Precise because I feed less and every dog I have ever had on it does excellent.

I just wanted to put this out there so as if any one else has a weight problem they may need to look at the calorie content.

Wow I've had just the opposite result. My dogs all got too fat on Canidae and I've had to decrease the food. i was feeding Wellness before.

Precise is not as high quality of kibble as Canidae. It is accceptable ,imo but there is definately better out there. Remember, Not all foods work for all dogs.

Here are the ingredients for 'Foundation' food by Precise: Chicken Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground Whole Wheat, Ground Yellow Corn, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Ascorbyl Palmitate), Rice Bran, Corn Gluten Meal, Flaxseed, Lecithin, Natural Chicken Flavor, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Dried Cheese, Dicalcium Phosphate, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin Supplements (A, C, E, B1, B2, B12, K, D3, and B6), Amino Acid Chelates (Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Cobalt, and Copper), Calcium Carbonate, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin, Folic Acid, DL-Methionine, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate.

3 of the top 4 ingredients are Grains(Rice, Wheat, Corn..ughh) and the meat is not human grade. There are many better alternatives out there. If Canidae did not work for your dog, I suggest you try another super premium brand such as Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold etc.
