nail biter

I have never seen a dog do this before but my rottie bites his nails! He keeps them nice and trim - bites them and spits the nails out. Does anyone elses dog do this?

My rottie has never done this but my border collie does. I thought I had a strange dog and didn't think anyone elses dog did this. I even went to the vet with this just incase anything was wrong, he said it was bordem, but we are always active and playing as I am training her for compertition obedience. I think that it is just a habit that she has picked up.

How bizarre! Geez, I hope my puppy does that - I'd love to not have to clip nails!! hehe

I guess as long as they're not biting them down so low that they're bleeding, and it's not affecting their teeth.... Why not?!

The only possible drawbacks I can see is:

- possible skin infection on his toes due to the constant licking and moisture (so just keep an eye on them).
- stepping on nail bits around the house
- that sound of biting nails while you're trying to watch a movie or get to sleep! ;)

My last Dobe had front dewclaws and she often did her own trimming on those. Marshall has his too and I've noticed him doing it a couple of times. Of course I still have to trim them, as they don't get it done quite good enough. ;)

Yep, when Sheena's nails get too long - she starts trimming them herself! :D

Daisy, the Furgrrrrrrrrl with her tail, has always trimmed her own nails, even the dewclaws. Her nails are as smooth and nice as can be. I am sooooooooooo glad I don't have to dremel or file or attempt to cut her nails! :D
