itching puppy

Hello. My four month old pup has had a bath 3 times since we've had her...about once every 3-4 weeks. She's basically an indoor dog, but she and our lab spend a few hours every day in the yard playing. She loves to roll around in the yard and gets dirty. She has minimal dander. I've checked her skin and it's nice and clear. No red or irritated areas. Her itching isn't constant. Her coat in shiny and sleek and I give her one cooked egg every day.
The first two times I used a mild puppy shampoo that I bought at Petsmart. The third time I used a shampoo with essential fatty acids. The last time my wife gave her a very light spray of Avon's SSS as she was told that would help cut down on the pup's itching. Any suggestions on any other products that we could try on her? Thanks in advance. BTW...she is fed super premium Maximum Nurtion Brand--chicken and rice puppy food.

Where on her body does she seem to be bothered the most? Ears, around the tail, elsewhere? Sometimes that is a clue as to the cause.

Well, no bells ring for me with those sites. You might consider adding a FA supplement to her meals. Particularly in the winter time we see what we call "winter itch" or dandruff which is caused by the drier air in heated homes and the dogs need a bit more fatty acids in their diet.

Hello
My pup is 8 months old and has a lot of red spots and dandruff around his tail area and he was fed with 30%fresh beef everyday with 70% dry food.
6 days ago, I start to fed him chicken instead of beef and seems redsports are gone, but the dandruff problem is still there and I took him to the vet and vet told me just give him a good bath. But it seems still same after 1 bath last night. (dandruff only occur around his tail area). Vet said its a common thing with rotties,
Could you anyone let me know what can I do?

As far as your puppy itching, you may be bathing him too much, try brushing the dirt out and giving him a rub with an old towel.
I really am not familiar with Maximium Nutrition brand of dog food. What are the first 5 ingredients in this puppy food?? If there is corn or too many types of grains(fractions) this may be causing puppy itchies:(
Let us know what is in the food... maybe this could help you.

Big Rotty:
Are you sure your pup has no fleas??? Red bumps around the tail area sounds like it could be fleas.
What dry food are you feeding??? What are the first 5 ingredients? It could be the type of food you are feeding.

Agreed. Irritation around the tail area usually means fleas.

the Max Nutrition first 5 are chicken, brewers rice, chicken meal, corn gluten meal and ground whole grain barley,,,,I also have a 6 year Lab which I feed Pedigree brand which first 5 consist of ground corn, chicken by product meal ,ground wheat, and lamb rice....I feed them serperately but sometimes the pup will get into the Pedigree left overs,,,,,I am trying to find a good product I can feed both dogs,,,,I have found Canidae in my area but at $40 a bag its kinda spendy and its only available in a shop appox. 50 miles from me,my regular close shopping outlets are Wal Mart and Pet Smart and they carry soooo many different brands but not Canidae,,,,Thank you for your input.........HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL........

Any kibble that has corn in it isn't among the best brands you can feed your dog. Read thru the postings in this discussion to learn what are the top brands of food.

Did your vet tell you it was Ok to use both at the same time? If not, you might be over-doing it. In general I prefer that people treat the premises than the dog as much as possible.

Mario,

I know you think Canidae is expensive, but you will have to feed only half of what you are feeding now... so the bag will last twice as long. It can be fed to your pup and to your older dog. If you are paying $20. a bag for the food you are feeding now this will be the same as paying $40. for the Canidae.
Personally, I would and do drive 45 minutes each way for Canidae and Felidae (for my cats).
You can pay for the good food now or pay the vet bills later:)

If you still don't want to get the Canidae, at the Pet Smart store available is Nutro Natural Choice (it has no corn). It is better then what you are feeding now.
Go to the naturapet.com web site for some food comparisons.

Thank You ,,I agree with you ..After going to Pet Smart and comparing their brand labels to what I have learned on this forum and the Rottweiler Handbooks I have gotten, my best way to go for BOTH dogs will be the Canidae brand, less hassle, one brand at feeding time, as its only my wife and I , the two dogs are our kids so we can afford to spoil em alittle..I am glad I found this site as it has givien me alot of information,, even if I have owned dogs in the past and not that I didnt care for them as much as I care for my new rott pup but I feel this breed is special and should be cared for and raised right from the get go to avoid any future problems as I know you do too.....Thanks again....Mario....and besides , she will enjoy the ride to go get her food.......:)

I'm glad you are going to switch to Canidae. I thinks it so cool that someone actually accepted and used the advice they asked for instead of becoming defensive. :)

Glad we could help you:)
One thing to remember is there are other good foods out there too. Canidae is a great food but if your dogs don't like it or don't seem to do well on it, you can change foods. Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Wysong etc. are other good foods, these are usually found at smaller pet food stores.

If you are going to buy the Canidae, get a bag of the Canidae Snaps (bisquits) the dogs will love you for it:D .
