| raw eggs, oils, pills for their coat?what's best i was curious about adding something to my 8 1/2 week pups food to improve the look of my puppy's coat. my vet said he puts vegetable oil in his dog's (don't know if it's a rottie) food every other day. i have heard sunflower oil causes cancer. fish oil is supposedly good. flaxseed oil may cause the skin to itch. raw eggs once a week or more is natural and does a body good. >these are all rumors i have heard and would like to know what everyone else thinks. also how old is a good starting age? my vet said it wouldn't hurt to start now but i'm unsure if his digestive system can handle this at such a young age. any responses are appreciated. thank you!

| My vet told me that too once a loooooooong time ago. I tried it for a while, it made no difference (vegetable oil, eggs, etc). I think if you feed your dog a great dog food, you don't need any of those "supplements." I know that ever since I started feeding my dogs Canidae, I have very little problems with dry skin, itching, etc, and their coats look great.

| oil, as a general rule the best are oils that are cold pressed. Heat processing destroys a lot of the goodies that the natural oils have, so most of the supremarkets oils exept cold pressed olive oil aren't really all that good. Flax seed does wonders for some dogs (it worked great for my dog when he was itching) and not so great with others. Fish oil (salomon cold pressed oil, not the oil that comes from the canned fish which is soya oil in most cases) is probably the best oil you can give to your dog. My dog gets a touch of olive oil daily, a bit of fish oil few times a week, raw egg (including shell) approx 3 times a week. IMO if the bulk of your dog's diet is good quality, the above mentioned items will just make it a bit better.

| Canned fish Feed your pup once a week with half a can of salmon or mackarel. Fish is rich in Omega fattyacid oils. Not only will improve his skin and coat, but also provides a very nutritious high protein meal. When your pup is six months old, then give him a full one can of fish (salmon or mackarel). When your dog is one year old, then give him two cans of fish... Once a week only ;) |

| canidae i have heard plenty of times that canidae is one of the supreme dog foods but i have not seen it in any vet, pet supply store,or supermarket. i live in panama city, FL and am unable to find any of the "better" brands. currently i am feeding him iams large breed puppy mixed with pedigree puppy w/ calcium. german vanegas-i once read you recommended the rottweiler handbook under a different thread, i ordered it and received it today. i have not read it yet but thank you in advance.

| Re: raw eggs, oils, pills for their coat?what's best raw eggs once a week I would NEVER give raw eggs to my dog - it can cause an inability to process other food products - Canidae is the way to go for food - Bucky has a wonderful shiny coat that I attribute to Canidae - Lisa (Bucky's Mom) |

| Raw Eggs Raw eggs affect the way a chemical called biotin is digested - the raw white of the eggs (albumin sp?) blocks the absorbsion of biotin - I ignorantly fed a German Shepherd I had long ago raw eggs as a reguloar diet supplement when he was a puppy - I created a nutrutional nightmare and his digestive system was compromised for the rest of his life - the Vet told me it was due to the raw eggs he was given as a puppy - Lisa (Bucky's Mom) |

| raw eggs are great source of proteins, minerals, all vitamins except c, fatty acids, lecithin and wide range of enzymes. By cooking egg a lot of it will be destroyed. Egg white contains avidin which binds biotin. This could became a problem if very poor diet (biotin deficient) is fed or a very young puppy is given too much egg whites. It shouldn't cause a problem in healthy adult dog that is fed a good diet. On the top of that egg yolk has plenty of biotin, so if there is a problem with egg white, cook it, but feed the yolk raw. | Hello, I have a 8 mos male that I feed cooked eggs every other day mixed in to his food. He looks great and is as active as they come. I also use Puppies milk as a suppliment 3 times a week. It's high in calcium, vitamin C and a couple of other things that I can't remember. |

| On the matter of oil, I do not feed oil BUT I use an oil based conditioner on my own hair (dyed and damaged) and it works great, but it seems to work VERY well on max. The vet had sgiven us some stuff that was oil based so we could bathe him more often but the Vitaplus I get works much much better. Oh and my Mom swears a can of beer will help but I havent tried it yet....Yuck a beer smelling dog...
