Personal preference. The standard is left to the judgment of people, and we humans tend to pick and choose the areas in the dog we feel are important. Thus, sacrificing the "complete" Rottweiler.

Some things are "trendy"...much like size once was. Or coloration, we've seen some mighty dark Rottweilers lately. My personal taste is mahogany. I do admire the richness of the deep, dark red tones. But lack of red isn't mahogany--is it?

You talk of "skilletheads" and "blockheads" (very cute), but again, only one standard for the head.

Head: Of medium length, broad between the ears; forehead line seen in profile is moderately arched; zygomatic arch and stop well-developed, with strong, broad upper and lower jaws. The desired ratio fo backskull to muzzle is 3 to 2. Forehead is preferred dry; however, some wrinkling may occur when the dog is alert.

So you see the standard doesn't call for either a "skillethead" or a "blockhead"....but the head should be "broad" between the ears with well defined Z arch.

The icon of a Rottweiler on this fourm has improper ears. The ears should be held tightly against the head, and stop at mid-cheek. A serious fault would be improper carriage (creased, folded, held away from the cheek and or head.

"A breed standard gives a verbal picture of what the PERFECT specimen should look like. One of the problems of a standard is that no matter how well written it may be, it is still subject to interpertation. That means new generations of breeders can gradually change the appearance of the breed by interpreting the standard differently.....In an effort to interpret standards correctly, it is my opinion that breeders and judges should always refer to the original standard, too, in their deliberations as to what is being described."

Okay, getting back on track. Rottie Dude, why don't you try feeding an excellent food such as Canidae which is for all life stages? I pay $28.99 for a 40 lb. bag.

It still would be a good idea to have your pup checked out to be sure all is well. And take a stool sample to be tested for parasites.

Traci,
He already purchased Nutro's Natural Choice, for the Large Breed Puppy.......Rottie Dude lives in Canada and is limited on the brands of foods. Hopefully, he can find Canidae--but for now, I agree NNC may work for him--or better yet, his dog ;)

I hope it works - I just know that my dogs didn't do well on Nutro. I'm not familiar with what may be available in Canada, but I read somwhere that an owner had no trouble getting it in her are of Canada. But hey, whatever works.

Just to make it straight living in Canada doesn't mean that you can't find supermpremium foods. If you live in on near a large city you can get pretty much any brand you want including canidae, wellness, solid gold, wysong, innova and many more, if you live in little populated areas than you may not get too much choice (I assume the same applies to US).

Oh Rottie Dude, you didn't start a war, we've been at war (against BYB's) for a very long time....trying to preserve the standard of this very fine breed.

Rottie Dude,

You didn't start a war. We were at fault for straying from the original suject at hand, but we tend to take every opportunity to voice our opinions on this subject we're so passionate about. Please don't hesitate to post any questions for fear that we may "run off at the keyboard" again. :)

Location: Port Perry, Ontario, Canada
Anyone in Ontario interested in feeding Canidae only needs to go to their website, www.canidae.com, and click on Store Locator. It will list all the stores that carry it in your location. That's what I did when I got my new pup last month. The closest store is 40 minutes from me (because I live in a small town), but I routinely have to drive 40 minutes to get to a mall or a large store, so it's no big deal picking up a bag of dog food on my way.

You won't find Canidae in a grocery store, PetsMart or any one of the chain pet stores, in fact, they've never heard of it. Most of the stores that carry it are independents. I live about an hour and a half east of Toronto and the going price seems to be $49.95 plus tax for the large bag.

CarolineS, thank for this info. I have tried several different foods on one of my Rotts and he ges loose stools. But if I feed a cheap or a diet dog food he has normal stools. I wonder if the Candidae will work. worth a try!..........................Sandi
