nail cutting

okay, i tried and barely had sucsess in cutting 10week old moto's nails, i held him down and alls he did was put my hand in his mouth and started to bite hard while screaming/ crying/howling.i took a 10 second break and proceeded to hold him down while i cut his nails i barely took anything off, because i am haveing a slight problem decifering where his vein ends and claw starts, so i took very small amounts off.i tried the treat/bribe thing, he eventually let me do his back legs but boy o' boy those front paws were a real bear for me to do,i can't imagine doing this when he's 100 more lbs, if he still acts up at that age ,i hope not

The day you brought him home should be the day you start trimming his nails. With all of my dogs that I've ever had I trim the nails once a week. When you do it this often you just take a small sliver off every time.
I suggest you wait till he is sleepy and quiet... you know when puppies just sort of collapse:) then get the clippers and sit down on the floor with him and gently start trimming.
Do this every week with him even if the nails don't need it... then I just touch the clippers to the nail.
He has to understand and learn that this MUST be done to him.
Remember when trimming nails... less is better... you don't want to cut the quick it hurts:(

Good-luck!

With a pup that small -
Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Put pup between your legs on his back holding him that way with your legs. Clip nails closest to you with a quick rub of tummy in between nails. Turn so the other end is near and do the rest.

The other method I use is a grooming time. I get the brush and brush and massage while telling the dog how pretty they are. They love the attention. I do nails and then brush some more and they learn to love that time.

Either way, I think dogs do better with a matter-of-fact approach. I believe when people tiptoe around things it builds aprehension in the dog no matter what the enterprise. Just do it. If he's too darn mouthy, lay one of your legs over his neck and keep going. He's not going to get any smaller like you said so you want to establish this as a weekly grooming routine. The massage I give is an opportunity to examine the dog for bumps or owies, clean ears when necessary and the whole thing.

You did fine as you completed what you set out to do. If you are concerned about quicking him, work so you are looking at the bottom of the nail and you can see how far to go.

I use a Dremel after the nails get too big for a human toenail clipper. I weigh less than 100 pounds and do three Rottweilers weekly........ You can do this.
