| I don't like the looks of the pork neck bones either. Lots of bone, and not much meat...around here that's how it's sold anyway.Yes...the tripe at the grocery store has been bleached and there is no nutrition in it at all. You need to feed green tripe...with all of the goodness. and stink.I used to be able to get frozen green tripe in 2 lb containers...but for some reason they stopped selling it. I now buy canned green tripe...not the same but the dogs do love it as a topping. Made by Tripett. Gina

| Re: Started with chicken now what? If you feed pork necks they really should be uncut. IMO they are too boney to be fed alone but go well with a big chunk of something boneless. I usually give pork necks and venison roast together along with a little liver. |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? He chews but only because he has to. If he could swallow something he would. I did ask the butcher to save me an uncut neck bone so I'll get that from them today. He still has a couple of pork butt roasts that I can give him with them. Has anyone seen pork roasts with a bone in it? Is that ok to give him? I'm also not sure what bone is in a pig's behind??? I'm looking into getting a freezer so I can stock up and I'll see about ordering tripe but I might try to find some canned to see what he thinks about it. Even though it's not exactly the same. Everytime he swallows something huge I just wait for it to come back up but it never does so maybe I should give him more credit. I just wish he would take his time and enjoy it but I know that's a human emotion. Neck bones are just so pointy on the ends. I'm not sure that if it got stuck I could get it out (or that he would let me for that matter). I'll just have to see how he does with the uncut one. One day I also gave him some sardines with the ribs. The whole can may have been too much cause he was a little loose yesterday. He likes them though. So much so that he rolled around in whatever was left on the grass. |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? Finally, insight into Raw Prey. Now my question is how much per day. A whole chicken, a rack of ribs. How many eggs and sardines? Yes, kibble is easier but......I'd love to give Mooshka all that he deserves. He's 98 lbs. and almost 3 years old. Hasn't tasted raw yet and won't until I know what I am doing. |

Since he has never had raw before, start slowly and see how he does...start with some raw chicken wings or chicken backs. You can even feed one meal kibble and the second raw. A pound or so, of raw meaty bones would be enough the first couple of times. If he does well on the chicken, then try some beef...go slowly...and see how things go. I would suggest you join a BARF or Whole Prey Diet forums, so that you can get all the info that you need...so a search on google...there are many raw forums. Gina

![]() You were asking about sardines and eggs...I often feed one meal of kibble and the evening meal of can of sardines and a raw egg thrown over the sardines....it's a favorite around here. ![]() Just remember to start slowly..if you your dog has eaten only kibble...just so their system has a chance to adjust to raw and to learn to chew properly. | Re: Started with chicken now what? Gina's husband: Your wife is a god send!!! I gave Mooshka his first raw egg today. He thought it a ball, but when he pierced it he did lick it all up. He wouldn't eat the shell so it went into his food. I bought a bunch of wings today so I'll wait until Monday night to feed him his first lb. That way I can be on poop alert on Canada Day. Nothing else I'd rather be doing. He has my heart. And you have my thanks. Where are you in Ontario? Maple Lodge Farms in Brampton has an outlet and chicken is reasonable there. I do have to find where in Toronto I can get beef heart and fresh venison and other quality stuff cheaper. St. Lawrence Market is just not in the price range. I do think that I can find Elk. So I'm thinking Elk organs for a treat every once in a while. Can't wait to see what he thinks about just sardines. I do put them in his homecooked after his stew is cooked. We are going up to Northern Ontario next month so I think I'll teach him to catch his own fish. Take good care...Your dogs need you. Actually so does mine since his own mommy is so new at this. I refuse to lose another gentle giant to cancer so I'm trying to do all that I can. |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? I would suggest not starting a 98# new to raw dog on chicken wings or backs. A lot of experienced raw feeders will suggest feeding a RMB larger than the dogs head. That's pretty darn big for our breed. Try giving a chicken quarter to start with until you see what kind of eater your dog is. Chicken wings and backs are too small for my comfort and are more likely to be swallowed whole before any crushing is done. You may find once the dog has some experience eating raw you'll feel comfortable feeding smaller pieces and your dog may handle them just fine. Good luck! |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? brutus'mother, I have just started on the raw and I started with boneless skinless chicken breast for right now because that is what I have at home and I am tired of cleaning up dog vomit Now my Rott will be 3yrs in Oct. and I did give it to him raw and he mouthed it but won't eat it, so I put is so hot water until the chicken was just a white color and he gobbled it up this was last night. I did the same thing this morning is this okay and normal for a dog that has never been fed raw before and will I be able to get to a point where I can just give him the meat and he will eat it?I will be getting him some chicken quarters today so that way he will get the bones. I have to keep telling my husband that the bones are fine and good for him I love that this site is out there to help us out. My Rott has such a tender tummy and I am tired of not knowing what is making him sick. He kept the chicken down from last night and so far all is going well from one I gave this morning. Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge and information, Dawn and Guinness |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? Raw meat does not have the aroma of processed kibble so it is pretty normal for a newbie to show some hesitation. Lightly searing a chicken breast is fine. Eventually your dog will realize...this is good stuff! I have seared organ meat because it isn't one of my dog's favorite meals. I would sear for a few days and then try it straight from the frig and see how it goes. Is there a reason your dog is vomiting? He has been to the vet, right? Good Luck! |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? Yes he has been to the vet and we can't find out why he vomiting. We had him Iams for a long time (I know not a good food) and then it was reformulated and he started vomiting so we went to Eukamuba and that didn't work, then we found out about Wellness, and we started him on that in April and he is now vomiting again. He has now had 4 of the raw meals and he is getting better about eatting it and has not gotten sick once I started with just the boneless skinless chicken breast and last night and this morning he has gotten legs, thighs, gizzers, and turkey neck. He loves the gizzers and each time I left in the water for less time. And Guinness is eatting bones and all. I also have a Rott/Great Dane Taz and anything that Guinness doesn't finish Taz will eat without a problem. As soon as we finish the bag of Wellness we have I will be putting Taz on the Raw diet also. I do have one more question do I leave the skin on or take the skin off of the chicken? Guinness is so funny with his chicken it's like he doesn't want to get he paws mess and won't hold the bones with his paws (silly dog). Thank you so much for your help, Dawn and Guinness |

| Re: Started with chicken now what? 2-5% of the adult body weight depending on the activity level of the dog. 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ/muscle. So far my not-rotts 6 years, 6 months, and 5 months olds have eaten mackerel, clams, sardines, chicken, pork ribs, beef ribs, pork chops, duck, feasant, deer, ground beef, beef heart, chicken gizzards/hearts/liver. To give you some idea of portion size my 6 month old/50pound, and my 5 month/40 pound pups eat half a chicken a day which weighs about 2.5 pounds, and they are fed once a day and are medium level activity dogs. If the poop comes out white out of the shoot then you are feeding too much bone. If it comes out runny not enough bone is being fed, or you have been feeding a organ/muscle meat meal. If feeding a organ/muscle meal add pork ribs or something with bone. Hope this helps! :)
