Re: Rotties in Jamaica? I had 6 Jamacian students working for me this summer. They were very afraid of my Rotties. They said Rotties are often used as police dogs in Jamacia. Mean in their words. Not so many pets. Think it is so?

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? Hello from Jamaica! Every experience I have had of Rottweilers and their owners in Jamaica has introduced me to hard men who train their beast as guard dogs to be feared. In general dogs are not too popular here. My Jamaican neighbours were horrified to see dogs inside my home, lying sleeping. 'You let them in?' squealed often in disgust. In general the majority of people are unable to comprehend the notion of a dog being part of a family. Dogs are, well it's a case of keep your dogs under control, tie them up, and if they are seen out and about by the goat farmers make sure your dog is trained to not eat any food, other than that from your hand, for lanate poison is administered often, thrown into your yard. I witness many people lamenting the demise of their dogs. Sad but true. The only people you see walking dogs are foreigners. It is a different world.

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? Geez...I could move there!!! Your description of non-family dogs sounds very similar to the way some farm people think of their animals here in Canada. The dogs are not allowed inside the house. Cats are kept in tje barn to keep down the mice. My aunt...a farmer's wife....could NEVER understand why animals were always wandering around inside my house!!!!

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? Thanks all, for your response. Unfortunately, I'm just now looking at them (don't have internet acess at home, yet). Yes the dog situation here at home in Jamaica is sad, especially where these magnificent Rotties are concerned. Dogs are meant to be kept outside; mine live in the house they only go out to pee, play and for training. Rotts are often mistreated because they are supposed to be vicious, and the only training they seem to receive is for guard purposes where they are brutalized. HOWEVER, there is a small band of genuine dog lovers who treat their pets far more humanely. I train on a Sat (obedience training) with a few buddies from the Jamaica Kennel Club, and I've met a few Rottie breeders who care about the breed and want so much to change the public's perception (I bought my Busta from one such couple). It's interesting, though, that my Rottie is the only one doing dog obedience! I hope that gradually over time citizens of Jamaica will see the other side of Rotties and come to appreciate their strong, gentle, confident, loyal nature. To that end, I'm hoping to train my Busta to do Dog-Assisted Therapy work.

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? Sadly rotties indeed all dogs get a bad rap here in Jamaica. I have been threatened with the death of my gorgeous dog several times since we became family. Dogs are a nuisance that are only here for the goat owners to poison. There excuse..............the dogs kill them herds and frighten the pregnant goats. Lanate is a painful poison and the death is horrific. But even the police just laugh.

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? Hello there, I know what you mean. I'm from Panama, Panama. There know one treats there dogs as family members, like we do here in the United states. People in Panama, keep there dogs as guard dogs. And are 24/7 chained up. They don't at all walk there dogs. Or vaccanate them. Most people abuse them. It's a different world there. And it's sad to go to my country to visit my family and friends. And to see so many stray dogs on the lose, most of them are sick and abused. People just don't care like we do. I hope to change that one day! Harlychick77 Michelle

Re: Rotties in Jamaica? well I live in peru and we have many of the same problems here I see stray dog or at lest I think the are strays they are too thin and eat out of the trash and sleeping in the street untill a few months ago rotties were looked at as the worst dogs on earth but there was a rottie named lay fun who killed a man who was brakeing to his owners placeand now everyone wants one to train to gaurd there places big suprize. I have 3 2 as show dogs and 1 as a bitch they live with me and everyone I know thinks I am nuts to have 3 beasts like that so close to me they see only the untrained dogs here mine are trained so they look mean but act like babies. I ask myself how could anyone live with an untrained rottie? People also over feed their rotties ( the only dogs I have seen here that are feed well by the way are rotties)so the poor things are fat and at risk of hip problems the breed is being missused here. And donīt get me started on killing dogs here the army picks up dogs off the street to train to kill they must kill so many dogs to get past the rank of dog so if the army does that and shows in on the news at 6 what could look for from the people on the street. I feel like i am alone here fighting a fight that I will never win but I speak up when I see someone mistreat a dog well sorry I think I got off thread
