Australian Health Certs and registration Hello Knowledgeable Rottweiler People, I have not posted for quite a while. I am still searching for the right Puppy. I am on a waiting list though. Please wish me luck. In my searches I have talked to many breeders and I have been recently contacted with an opportunity to acquire an older puppy, that looks like a he may grow to be a real champion. I have been sent photos and some background information on the sire and dam and a breeder I know has imported his sister from Australia. My question is... How do I check to see is the health certification claims (hips, elbows, heart, and eyes) are genuine? As far as I can tell the hip test is done by local vets and not by an anonymous panel. Is there an equivalent registry in Australia like the OFA in the USA? Does anyone have any other information about breeding and health standards in Australia? Any recommendations? I am a bit hesitant to ask the breeder who imported the sister, because she is the one trying to rehome this pup with me. She is actually offering to share in the shipping expense for rights to this pups sperm if he is the Champion she thinks he is. She seems to be very good, but it is a conflict of interest. She cannot keep this male pup, she has too many dogs by my count already. Before the questions start. I am not looking to import all the way from Australia and am leaning heavily to saying no to this offer. But I would like the information to see if all this is genuine or not. Thank you all, ahead of time.

As far as I can tell the hip test is done by local vets and not by an anonymous panel. Is there an equivalent registry in Australia like the OFA in the USA? Xray scores are done by certified vets here chosen by the "Hip and Elbow Scheme" and should not be hard to verify as they will come with offical papaer work from this group with all details about the dog and his/her scores. Mouth and eye are simply checked by the local vet but this is not normally a big problem as anyone with any real knowledge and make such an assesment. [b]Does anyone have any other information about breeding and health standards in Australia? Any recommendations?[B/] Breed standard wise most breeders breed almost exclusively for showing so show standard is very good. We have, same as every other country, people who operate outside any real standars. In terms of health cert hips and elbows are the strictly followed ones with mouth and eye being prefered by most decent breeders now days. Very few do heart etc. However I must say that we have very few heart problems within the gene pool here (to the point I have never scene or heard of anyone having dogs with such problems) so few feel the need to check for such things. Bone cancer is probably the largest health problems in dogs here but many breeders feel they are aware of which dogs produce this and stay clear of it so some feel it is on the decline. If you are still interested in the pup feel free to PM me and I will give any info (if any) that I have regarding him, his sire and dam etc. Mick. |

Re: Australian Health Certs and registration Mick, Thank you so much for the information. I have already declined the pup since I was told it would take three days to ship the pup from down under. I could not really justify forcing a pup take such a long trip, especially an older pup that would remember the trip well. I guess the one description I heard about the condition of a shipping container upon arrival was enough to dissuade me. Thank you for your kind offer to check the parents. If I break down and change my mind about importing pups from Australia I would very much like your assitance. I have always wanted to visit Australia, and might one day carry a young pup home with me on the return trip. The Aussie dogs are quite stunning. Thank you, Ema

Re: Australian Health Certs and registration Hi I have imported some dogs from Australia to Sweden, and I am very pleased so far. All of them has passed the Swedish mentaltest, and most of them has been clear on our x-ray, the ones that didnt got free, has just minor faults..+/-. I recommend the kennel we import from in Australia, they really cares about their dogs, and I know them very well, so well that they have been over in Sweden 2 times, to see how their dogs are doing:-) Tomas Forsén Sweden

Re: Australian Health Certs and registration Megalomanias in Sweden, Thank you for your input. It would be lovely to find a breeder who is passionate enough about the welfare of thier dogs to travel all the way to the USA (or Sweden in your case). We cannot post about breeders specifically on this forum, but when you become a full member of this forum maybe you could send me a private message. I am on a waiting list of excellent breeder who is also just as passionate about her dogs. So hopefully she will have a pup for me her next breeding. But one can never know how many pups there will be, and if their personailties would suit ours. Any information on great breeders is always welcome.
