I somewhat believe that our preceived weakness here in the US will also prove to be our strength. The weakness being the lack of a breed warden system that regulates who can breed what. This becomes our strength in that breeders choose as individuals what characteristics they want in their programs, leaving room for those who want to continue with strong working attributes. With a breed like the Rottweiler, there are so very many things we need to pay attention to that selection will never be totally ideal for all, but the gene pool is quite large which again is a plus. Breed type (absolutely), basic character, dentition, drive, hips, elbows, hearts, eyes, and the list goes on. Is the whole country comprised of "ethical breeders" - of course not. However, we have a diversity of breeders just as we have a diverse gene pool in the breed. I have hope.

JudiW. yes we do more than enough(good dogs and blood)...if we only had enough ethical breeders?
I agree that we all need to stand together & unite in our fight against BSL's but....
I do not agree that we need more ethical breeders the truth is we need far LESS unethical,BYB,puppymills etc! Also even ethical breeders are sometimes fooled by prospective puppy owners & make a bad choice well perhaps(I know we aren't perfect) we really need to reevaluate our methods by which we approve or disapprove these people just a suggestion & even a lot of the "ethical" breeders do not work their dogs in any venue other than conformation sorry folks but if ya don't do some kind of work with your dog it isn't a complete dog! JMHO Conformation is just that a beauty contest no brains needed! Heck anybody can do it I know I have but also do something else SCH,tracking, herding, obedience(requirement in my book)(there is nothin worse than 75-135 lbs of rude, uncontrollable dog)SAR, ring, therapy, and the list goes on! This is the only way we will be able to preserve our breed and continue to be able to own & love them! Sorry to be so long winded but......can't help it I LOVE this breed & do not want the same thing to happen here as has happened in other countries.

Here in the USA, local governments (state, county, municipal, townships) are the ones consistently proposing and enacting dog legislation. So while you are distracted by the fact that there is no federal legislation on this issue, YET, the local goverments in the meantime are taking our dog ownership rights away. Check that out!

When we lived in the Netherlands with the U.S. Army, we had no on base housing so we lived on the Dutch economy. It was a new base being set up to replace the one's in France, where DeGaulle had kicked us out. We were advised then that the Dutch tax people might come to the house to assess our belongings, and we were not to let them come in, because we were not subject to the type of taxes levied there. the Dutch property tax includes your belongings ie. furniture. paintings etc. We tend to think of the social democracies in Europe as the same as ours, they are not. We rely on personal responsibility a lot more and govern more from a local level.
