| Here's some information on ADRK standard for tails. (This information is provided by Case van Hattem in South Africa.) The information is from a seminar Helmut Freiburg gave in South Africa a couple of years ago. He was Chief Judge at ADRK at the time - in the case of the Rott, this description will not be finalised for a few years yet, except for the disqualifying types of tail. Case goes on to say that - "On the agenda for the IFR this year is the subject of tails, correct tail, correct carriage etc. Reports from Germany as well as from people who have imported Rotts with tails ( like me ) indicate that there are no bad surprises at all worth mentioning. [In other words, no particularly odd types of tail or tail carriage - like none with long hair or curled around over back like a Malamute. nce] To date all dogs under 18 months age in Germany have tails. As for other countries, FCI standard has not yet been published so the old stndard still applies outside of Germany. Holland has a few years reprieve from the Govt and the rest in Europe will come under Europen rules they tell me by 2001 anyway which makes the standard irrelevant. When the standard is finally published, some 79 countries will adopt the new standard. Apparently, 95% plus of all the tails (in Germany) are carried correctly, which is in a sabre curl over the back when alert and in a smooth sweep downwards like a Berneses tail, when passive. Scandinavia has more experience then anyone at this time since tail docking has been banned there for many years now, I guess close to 10 if not more. At 9 1/2 months my dogs tail is 16 1/2" long and circumferance at the base is 6"."
