Importing dogs?

I am looking at importing a dog from Belgium. I live in Canada and was wondering how is the cost determined? By crate size or do you pay by the pound? I was also wondering how a payment is made to the breeder? Do I send him a cheque and then hope that there is a dog on the next plane from Belgium or can you pay cash on delivery. Has anyone imported a rott from overseas and if so what was their experience like.

I am also a Canadian. My newest rottweilers name is Piper. Do you have a dog with that name as well?

I have imported three rottweilers into Canada two I went to pick out myself and one I had the breeder pick for me. I have just brought in a boerboel from South Africa last week. I also brought in a cane corso from Florida.

The way I sent sent money was through a bank transfer. I sent the money up front and that will probably be the way you will have to do it.

The bank will charge you for the wire. Customs Canada will charge you GST and as of this year PST. Agriculture Canada charges a few of about $35.

Why are you getting a dog from Belgium and not Germany?

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

The price is set by the cage , if you take a D cage (up to 64 kg) you will pay 64 times the amount per kilo. So even if you put in a dog of 20 kg you still will be paying for 64 kgs.

Hi Chuck My dogs name is Von Ryans Rowdy Rottypiper but we call him Jake. The reason I'm looking at a dog from Belgium is because of the working lines that this dog comes from. Without being to nosy could you give me a ballpark figure of what i can expect to pay for shipping on a 12 week old puppy? I don't know the weight.

The price from Germany was around $420 when I shipped last year. The breeder will be arranging the shipping of the pup and will be paying in his countries currency, therefore the costs to you will change with the exchange rate. It should be slightly less to fly the pup from Belgium then from Germany. If you get the price in the foreign currency then e-mail it to me and I will convert it to Cdn. dollars for you.

Is the same Von Ryan that breeds dobermans?

Thanks for your help Chuck! Von Ryan last I heard no longer had dogs as the women met up with a millionaire and now has other things on her mind. I guess I would to! So I gues from the responses I've had I can expect to pay $400-$600 US. He better be one hell of a working dog!

The price I quoted was Canadian dollars. When I got my last German import in June '98 the final price including shipping, GST and other fees, worked out to be some where in the $2100 Canadian range. The only new fee since then is PST which Ontario started charging last summer. I do not know about the other provinces. I consider my rottweiler to be a bargain at that price because he has tremendous drive.

Hey Chuck what airport did you have your dog shipped to and was it a direct flight? How was the gst determined? What price did you give them? Could you say it was a gift? I'm in Ontario so I would like to have him shipped to Toronto or Detroit if I have to.
Thanks

hi there l live in the uk were there is 6 months qurrintine or 9months breeder qurintine under the balia directive believe you me youve got it good importing to canada l,m importing the first central asian orvcharka to the uk this year and basicly a good breeder should arrange everything for you and tell you the costs you ushally pay by bank transfere. then recieve your dog as prearranged some breeders send official papers as a act of faith before hand by airmail as far as cost find out the airport of departure and arrival and the airlines that work it then ring the airline give the wight of the dog and measurements for the cage [in the uk the dog most be able to get up and turn around]and the airline will tell you the cost be sure the dogs got health certificats on arrival and prefibly a microchip etc in youre part of the world it,s quite easy for further advice contact youre kc club or ministry of agriculture. l breed rotties as well and if l was you l would go to the uk or pref germany l can give you the addresses of the most republe breeders in the uk if you wish and l,m also expecting a litter of a good working type rottie late this year my self. interms of the best physic for a working rottie l would say a slightly longer backed and legged dog is good with a tail plus a bright dog eager to please these things are sometimes not so commen in youre normel squareer type wich is say a little more aloof and in my opiniun a bitch is more willing to please easier to contain and less preoccupied hope you get your pup soon jason jasonc50@hotmail.com

Thanks for all your help. The advice I received was bang on. It cost me $620 US to ship the dog. The dog travelled from Brussels to London Eng and spent the night and was shipped the following day to Toronto Canada. The cost was slightly higher because it was a nondirect flight and the original crate was deemed to be to small by the Brits so we had to go to an intermediate size crate. It's unfortunate there wasn't a direct flight to Toronto or Detroit but this worked out pretty well. The pup has adjusted well to our home and is chasing the rag with a fury. I can't wait to see him hit a sleeve when he gets older.
In the future I would seriously consider flying over and bringing the pup back with me as luggage. The cost would be slightly higher but atleast I could make a vacation out of it. My dog is from Vom Schloss Hexental Kennel.
