$620US is around $940Cdn. I payed that or a little less to fly a pup out of South Africa. When I purchased a pup last year from Germany I only paid about $460Cdn. and the pup flew from Northern Germany to Frankfurt then to Toronto.

What type of training are you planning on?

Hi Chuck. Now you got me thinking I got ripped off. How old was your pup and what size was the crate? Also would it matter what time of year he was sent? I imagine Christmas time is a prime time for the airlines. To be honest I haven't decided what sport I'm going to train him in. I would like to do Belgium ring but realistically Schutzhund is my better bet. I will let the dog make that decision for me when he gets older and I see what he's got. What sport do you train your dog's in? Feel free to email me if you would like to carry this on off the board.

I did not want to say you were ripped off because I do not know all the facts. It could just be the Christmas thing but the 8 week old pup I flew in from South Africa was on 10 Dec 99 on KLM airlines. He changed flights in New York.

The 8 week old rott pup I flew in from ermany was in June 99. Both pups were flown in a typical size crate for an 8 week old pup.

I am currently doing schutzhund with my dog. I may switch to mondio ring after I put a SchH I on him. I like the different situations that are presented in mondio ring but I do not like the almost total concentration on prey drive during bite work. I like the schutzhund clubs in my area (Guelph) because they start the dogs out behind a fense and work the dogs in defence drive. I do not like the way the dog is expected to heel in schutzhund. I also do not like using food to teach a dog to heel. My dog almosts takes my hand off for a treat because of this training method. Let me know if want info on the location of any of the above mentioned clubs.

Yes we start the dogs out in defense at the two clubs I go to. The one club (WRAC) trains at two locations one location is outside of Cambridge and the other is outside of Stayner (near Wasaga Beach). New people do not get to do bite work at this club until you put a BH on the dog. The other club which I have gone to a few times is SORC (Southern Ontario Rottweiler Club) which trains in the Mississaga area. You can do bite work at this club before a you put a BH title on the dog.

There is another club called SORE that does French and mondio ring training. I have watched a couple of their mondio ring trails and trained with them once. They train in both the Cambridge and Hamilton areas.

With your pup being older he probably required a larger crate. Flight costs are determined by crate size so this may have accounted for the extra expense.

My pup was 13 weeks when he was shipped and had to be in a larger crate so I'm sure that accounted for some of the cost. Oh well, I hope money well spent. You said in your posts that you start the dogs off in defense drive? Or did I misread the post? Where abouts do you train in Guelph? I am from London and I know a couple of people from the Woodstock area that do Schutzhund and I met someone who belongs to a club in Windsor. We train around the London area. There are myself and 2 others that are regulars together and sometimes the 2 Woodstock guys join in. Our dogs are being trained towards ring sport right now but I may do schutzhund with my rott or American Bulldog.
