Rotties from Hungary

Does any one know about Rottweilers imported from Hungary? We got our girl from there and she has had quite the health issues. Are health issues common in imported dogs? Our last girl was a rescue and was never sick until she died.

As with dogs in the states, it all depends on the kennels over there and what type of health certifications they do on the sire and dam. The puppy that you imported......did her parents have their health certifications?

What type of sickness are you talking about? Hips, eyes, hearts?

I have a friend who has imported 3 puppies from Hungary. One is ok, the other two both died at an early age from heart problems.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

I have heard of VERY FEW kennels in Hungary that are really any "good"

"It is not a rich country and a lot of breeders are no better than the backyard breeders here" is what I was told.

I have Imported some very very nice dogs from Hungary over the years and have had no problems. That being said many people try to buy dogs over the internet a World away without knowing the breeders they are dealing with and that generally is a mistake. Exactly what health issues are you having and what kennel did your dog come from?

Breeders in Europe do not screen for hearts and eyes.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Thanks for the imput.
Both of her parents had health certifications. She had parasites, ear mites, bacteria overgrowth in her stomach, diarreha for 6 months, can't eat dog food of any kind, that being said, we found a wonderful vet who helped me every step of the way. He had to give her so many tests and different kinds of meds, that he didn't even charge me for half of them. Finally, he hit on a medication called tylosyn. He wanted her to go through at least one heat to see if natural hormones played a part in her illness. He said that sometimes dogs that have been imported , may have been born into poor health conditions to begin with. Contaminated water etc. She just hit eleven months and is 110 lbs. Her vet says he must keep a close eye on her always. That was why I was curious about other imported rotties.
Again thanks
Jane

A 110lb bitch is either grossly over-sized or morbidly obese.

I know she is quite huge. Her head rests on the kitchen table. She is a tall girl. Vet says she is good weight for her age and height. Since I have always cooked for her,It's difficult to judge her meals so I try to go by calories which is difficult since she is still considered a puppy and is still growing.

I agree with this statement. I've seen some dogs come from there that are in good healthy condition. While another breeder I know, wasn't so lucky... his female passed on at the prime of her life due to cancer. He only had her for a few months after importing her and then she passed on. Makes you wonder if anyone regularly checks for cancer, with at least simple blood work, before shipping the dog or if they already knew this before doing so.

I'm sure there's risks anyone takes, no matter the location, if you don't know the breeder and their dogs' bloodlines in great detail.... even still, poor health can happen to any living creature.

I'm sorry your going through such a mess with yours... I do hope it gets under control.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Just do your homework before you import anything.Ask around, there are a lot of people connected to the web who can provide very valuable information.Be very, very carefull with buying in the former East-European country's cause if they didn't cheat you ,they sure forgot it.This with a very few exceptions. !

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Sometimes it can be very difficult to distinguish a reputable kennel from poorer European countries because there are ways to fake papers, credibility and lineage. It is important to be very selective.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

I know that there are many excellent kennels in Hungary, Serbia, Croatia and other countries in that region. In my opinion a good kennel depends on the person, their intent and love fot he dogs. Any purchase demands scrutiny and investigation. I bought a pup from Serbia, but only after a lot of checking. He's got a great pedigree and has already won his first show as best Rottie pup and Best pup in show with an Excellent Rating VVN1. That said I believe if you want a German dog and and you want to import with the least problems then log onto the ADRK website and pick out a breeder and start calling. All ADRK breeders in Germany are strictly controlled and you will have the least possibility of having a sick dog. Gerhard Apel has some great looking pups and he's "religious" about his dogs.
