Re: Rotties from Hungary

The only draw back with going to Germany is the tails of course, I actually have a dog that is by a Hung male out of Yug bitch and most of the dogs on his pedigree are German, Rick, Matcho, Filou, etc. I've been told that even the pedigrees may not be, how can I say this, "accurate". His drives are good but but he is a 25" male. Very balanced and typey, but definately has the head that you see on most Hung/Yug dogs. These countries are gaining in popularity for me I'll stick with the lines I know from now on.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Hi Jane,
I have a friend who has a beautiful 2yr old dog from Hungary. He was just diagnosed with SAS (sub aeortic stenosis). The dogs in his pedigree have hip ratings, but as Bostonrott and Sharon said it seems they do not test for heart problems. I hope your girl is doing better and only had aquired health problems and not any genetic ones. Keep us informed as to how she is doing.
Best of luck,
Lynne Panno

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Hi Lynne,
Lola is doing much better as she gets older. She was finally able to be spayed and with that went the chronic diarrhea and vomiting. She still can't tolerate any kind of dog food. Not even the highest quality. The vet feels that she got this bacterial over growth in Hungary and because it went unchecked, it progressed like a nightmare. My other rottie was a rescue and never a problem with her. Lola was a purchase. She was in a cage for the first four months of her life. She had so little human contact it was just horrible. She shook so when the guy opened her door, I couldn't believe this was a rottweiler. Finally she came over to me and let me hold her. She wrapped her paws around my neck and just hung there. I couldn't put her down. That precious nose against my cheek. The guy said he really was having trouble selling her and gave her to me at his cost. To tell you the truth,I couldn't get out of ther fast enough with my girl. When she was vet checked, I had every test done including xrays. And that is about when all the health issues presented. We keep a very close watch over her and so far so good. Thanks for asking about her. Hope all your Rotts and not rotts are doing great.
Jane

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Hi Jane,
Glad to hear that Lola is doing better as she grows up. It's good to know she has found a great home with someone who is willing to give her a chance and bring her back to health both physically and emotionally. She sounds like she is a real sweetie, keep up the good work with her, best of luck to both of you, and a big hug for Lola!

Lynne

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Hungaria is a neighboring country and i know for sure they have at least a few good kennels. So does Serbia, Slovenia, even Romania has one...But you have to know where to look. I would check what awards those dogs won, for me that shows the dedication of that breeder. Look who won the Balkan Sieger that year and the years before and you will see the names of a few good kennels, of at least a few good lines to look for. You can see that many breeders have both the male and female imported from Germany. Keep in mind that good dogs are expensive everywhere, and if you import from a so called "former East-European country" ( we didnt move! =) ) just for the low price you have good chances to get a poor quality dog. However judging from what i saw on the sites of some breeders in US...i would say if you dont know from who better buy from Europe. Thats because most of the dogs ( at least the ones in here) were imported from germany not many generations ago, and had no time to degenerate.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

The "breeder" we got Arwen from had a hungarian import (Arwens sire). To me the "import" part didn't mean anything but as a newbie to dogs I was clouded that their health clearences are the same or at least very close to ours. When looking at all the titles on the pedigree I saw all these -HD things and figured it was good, live and learn, I don't love her any less, but I know what to look for and stay away from next time. Unless the owners have had the dogs retested in the states then I wouldn't buy an "import". I have so much to learn.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Buying from Hungary, Germany or for that matter, the U.S. all is the same. If you do not look at the kennel/breeder/lines then you have opened yourself up for a major disaster. I have brought in several top bitches from eastern europe, each exceptional, each as healthy as a rott can ever be. Very well maintained, trained, groomed and each vet checked with flying colors. The only difference I see between countries is you have easy accessability to civil action here -vs- there, which you just end up writing it off. Knowing a good vet in the country of origin helps also.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

I purchased a rottie who was born in the states, but his parents are both imports from Hungary. I checked out both parents and spoke to the breeder who imported both mom & dad, he is well known and has great dogs. The only difference I have seen from this rottie and my 2 previous ones, one which I rescued and believe he came from a pet store, but he ended up with a great temperment, but many medical problems, well my 14 mos. old dog seems to have more drive and needs to be kept busy, which we always do. A great dog, but once again, research, research, the more people educate themselves about this breed and what they require the better off they will be.

In Norway u have to screen the eyes before mating your dogs, if u dont do that u cant registrate the litter, Sweden are going in the same way.

Same here as far as I know!!!

So far, a dog with or a dog having surgery for entropian will never pass our BST.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

Even in Germany for many years only hips were being done. One of the major reason we have so many elbow problems is because it was ignorned for so long. Now alot of countries including the US are caughting on and screening for all possible problems. Still, you will hear time and again that eastern block countries do not do the screening that Germany and the US does. I had one German breeder tell me and I do quote "The breed anything over there...worse than the US" so don't be offend we aren't perfect either.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

To even concider to take your bitch or male in breeding in Sweden, you have to x-ray elbows and hips and do a mentaltest. That is to be approved by the Swedish Canine Council, and to be approved by the Swedish rottweilerclub you must have a showresult with at least SG, and no disqualifying faults on your mentaltest. I think this is a pretty good system.

Re: Rotties from Hungary

My girl is 116.5 lbs and my vet said that she could stand to lose 5 lbs but she is in great shape. He said that she is the older style Rottweiler and that her larger frame and square body support more weight. And she meets the AKC standards for height and has great proportions eventhough they are on the larger side..
