Dutch MAG test/ ZTP at November 21st. 2004

Good afternoon to you all,

With pleasure I want to let you know that the following Ter Waele dogs were entered at the Dutch MAG test (Dutch ZTP) at November 21 st. 2004. at the Rottweiler training club Veluwe-IJsselstreek.

My very special thanks and greetings to my close friends mr. Mario Montes-Klaver and his wife mrs. Amanda van Poelgeest, owners of one of the most beautifull rottweiler bitches I have ever bred: Ter Waele Vaye who did pass the ZTP with flying colours in September 2004. They went with me to this ZTP and they handled for me Ter Waele Utwo and Ter Waele Usko and did help and support me during the confirmation part and the rest of the day.

Ter Waele Utwo.

Ter Waele Utwo passed the following parts of the test:
A = social
B = confirmation
C = Independence part (defence)

Ter Waele Utwo did not wanted to let out that easily as she attacked the helper during the attack. Took him quite a while till she was willing to let out. During the friendly approach of part C was Ter Waele Utwo placing her front paws at his chest and was trying to have a lot of fun with the helper.

And
Ter Waele Vrekje, NHSB 2.43.89.59, HD Free, (HDA, according FCI standard) ED Free, BH, Day of Birth, August 18th. 2002, AKC DNA Profile #V319410 (U.S.A.)

will be re-entered for the ZTP in 2005. He did pass the part B & C of the test but as he nipped at one of the objects during part A of the test he was not able pass. The judges did regret this very much as further his behaviour was of an outstanding quality.
To explain to you all our Dutch ZTP / MAG test I give you the additional information about it.

Part A
This part of the Dutch ZTP does exist of 17 different situations a dog has to do and several situations during this ZTP are done without the owner. During several items of this part A of the ZTP the dog is without his or her owner who is absolutely out of site of the dog.
Each item of the test is done exactly the same time as the previous one. Test leader is using a stopwatch for each situation.

Part B of the Dutch ZTP is confirmation part, done by a judge who is a breed specialist. Dogs are measured, teeth must be complete and bite must be correct. The dogs do get a written critique who is very accurate and really does give you an idea of the dog who is being judged.

Part C = Defence. The dog is left alone totally separated at the training field without any support of the owner, who is absolutely out of sight of the dog and who is not able to give any support at all to the dog. The dog is left alone for approx 15 minutes. After this period the dog is approached by the helper, in the outfit of a KNPV schutzdienst (Dutch policedog outfit) several times.

Helper does go to the dog and tries to approach it in a friendly approach. Helper will try to pat the dog and make contact. Dog is allowed to ignore the helper.
Helper turns around an leave the dog, walk away for approx. 25 mtr. and runs towards the dog.
Dog is allowed to bite but is also allowed to stay calm.
Helper turns around an leave the dog again for approx. 25 mtrs.
And runs towards the dog and tries to attack it.
Dog is allowed to bite or try to stop the helper to jump against him.
Helper turns away and turns around after 25 mtrs. and approach the dog again in a friendly situation.
The dog is than allowed to ignore the helper or to come forward to him.
Part C of the Dutch ZTP is totally different than the Defence part of the German ZTP.

Parts A & B must be passed before a dog can be used for breeding + the dog/bitch has to have two times the valuation of minimal Very Good at an official show and at least one of these results must be achieved under a breed specialist judge.

Further the dog must be HD free or HD B before you are allowed to enter a dog at the Dutch ZTP (MAG) test.

A dog who can not be identified properly at the MAG test. Unreadable microchip or tattoo is not allowed to pass the test either.

Part C is done only if the owner wants to enter her or his dog at this part of the test.

The judges are special judges for the MAG test and there are minimum two judges who do judge the dogs.
There are two till three test helpers who also are officially qualified for this by the Dutch Kennel Club. And there is also a representative of the Dutch Kennel Club at each test too.
The judges do not know the dogs they are judging. The only thing they do see at their papers is the microchipnumber, the Dutch studbooknumber and the date of birth of the dogs who are tested. All dogs who are tested are video taped for part A and C.
The test is only being held if the maximum of 10 dogs is reached as the costs are extremely high for the Dutch Rottweiler Club. Members of the club do have a small discount on the entry fee.
All results of the test are registered officially by the Breedwarden of the Dutch Rottweiler Club and the Official Dutch Kennel Club. You are not allowed to breed a dog/bitch is you have not received the official result of the MAG Test/ZTP by the Dutch Kennel Club.

The dog can, if they are scared or in panic, run away for approx. 10 mtrs. The dogs is wearing during the entire test during all the parts a heavy leather collar. During part A the dog is on an automatic flexyleash which allows the dog to run away for approx. 10 mtrs.
During part C is the dog is linked to an iron chain of approx 10 mtrs.

I will try to add Ter Waele Utwo and Ter Waele Vrekje to my breeding programm in 2005. The girls will continue their training schedule for the IPO trials and will be entered together with some other members of the
Ter Waele dogs also at the biggest most important show in the Netherlands The Winner show in Amsterdam at November 27th., 2004. So no time to rest for them. But they love to work and I am pretty sure we all will enjoy it.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Re: Dutch MAG test/ ZTP at November 21st. 2004

Huge congrats Kiene.

I know you detailed part C the defense test where the dog is tethered with a chain and alone without it's handler

But can you detail parts A and B as well? Most people don't know how tough the Dutch mental (temperament) test is and how few dogs can pass first time out.

The Dutch test is one of the toughest/most difficult if not the toughest mental test I know of from the dog's point of view and it's worth people reading the details to realize just how tough

many thanks

Re: Dutch MAG test/ ZTP at November 21st. 2004

Good morning,

Thank you for your reply. It sounds maybe unfriendly but the KNPV trials are no option for me. I do not find them suitbable for our breed.

The Rottweiler is too heavy and for this kind of sport and sometimes also not fast enough. I do have quite some people who want a dog for the KNPV sport and I will only considder the thought of selling a dog to somebody who does this type of sport when I am absolutely convinced that the person only does this for sport and not for the money and that if the dog/bitch is not suitable for these extreme sport it still can stay with the family.

Many of these persons in the Netherlands who do this type of sport train the dogs and once they have a certificate PH 1 or more on the dog they do sell the dogs to the police etc. Also to the USA, Korea etc.etc.
For some people it is extra income and the sooner a dog has a certificate the better it is.
They do train their dogs quite often 3 till 4 times per week.

For the KKNPV sport they do use the Malinois, Dutch Shepherd dog, sometimes the German Shepherd dogs and the crossed breeds from KNPV lines. Also in the past was the Bouvier knows as a good KNPV dog. Unfortunally this has changed during the last 25 years.

For the Malinois and German Shepherds there are a few kennels in the Netherlands specialised in breeding correct dogs, confirmation wise and for good hips and elbows etc. who can forfill the heavy KNPV programm. These dogs do have the official pedigree of the Dutch Kennelclub.
The breeders/owners of these kennels are in their breed already for a very very long time and know more about bloodlines than anybody else.

If I do a breeding and raise a litter I want the pups to go to homes were they do understand our breed, were the new owner will love the dog and tries to have fun with the dog. If it turns out to be a great dog/bitch for confirmation or working it is nice and great. But I do not sell my dogs to somebody when I do know upfront that once they have achieved the certificates the dog/bitch will be sold for the highest price. Therefor I do not spend many many hours to my pups, youngsters and adult dogs and to the breed overall.

Also I do have quite often some problems with the methods who are sometimes being used at the KNPV trainingclubs to achieve their results also at the IPO trainingsfield I do not like certain methods of training. And I have at this moment achieved with many dogs of my own breeding results at this part of the sport that I think I am entitled to say this.

There are some videos available in the USA with the KNPV programm so you are able to see what will demanded from dog and trainer.

Hope you do understand my point of view.

Have you all a nice day.
sincerely,

Kiene Zandbergen

Kiene - I most certainly do understand your point of view, and in no way did you come across as unfriendly. I posted that comment of mine about the KNPV half-heartedly. I've seen a couple of videos of the trials in Holland, and I'm aware of the demands put on the dogs. I've also come to understand that almost half of the dogs that pass this training are sold to the military or police.
Best wishes-
kathy
