rottweiler can run ?

Hi,
My question will probably sound stupid to all experts but I've never seen a rottweiler run for a long time... let's say 5 or 10 or 20 minutes non stop.

let's say if I go for a jogging, can I take the dog with me or the dog will stop running after 5 minutes ?

just a question I know that some dogs can run no problem what about the rott ? it's a muscular dog but can it keep up with the pace ?

thanks.
please don't kill me :D

Check this site

Many Rottweilers have "run" this trial.

My rottie will run non stop around our fenced play yard.. (60ftx45ft) for the dogs, for about 15 min's each morning when we let her go before letting the other dogs in for the day.

Caleb used to run 3 miles with me about 6 days a week. He loved it.

I am also running with my dog about 3 to 4 times a week for about two miles. I normally some half way to do some retreiving and playing for a while, but running continuously is not a problem. Though I always find the he tends to lead a little when we start and he always lags when we return. The other thing to remember is to feed him a little more... otherwise his ribs will start to show.

I was wondering about this myself as sadie is now 18 months and her joints can probably take some longer runs. i've heard that the muscular design of a rott is not designed for longer runs(30-40 minutes). i was advised to stick with hikes and add a few minutes of jogging to the hike instead of doing a full on jog. has anyone else heard this?

You may want to do a search. There are other threads on jogging with your Rott. I believe it is best to wait until the dog is at least 2 y.o., particularly if you are running on hard surfaces. You may also want to check with your vet.:)

This is interesting because I have never thought of jogging versus the Rottweilers' joint structure. I have kept British Rotties earlier and noticed that they have straigter stifle versus the German line that I have which have more angulation. The British are more compact and the German are more leggy so to speak. But I have been jogging with both "type" without much of an issue, but definitely not during the puppy stage. They are more than 5 years old now, and the structure seems to affect the ability to gallop versus the trots.

The other perception I have was more of like us, we need to build up the muscles and stamina for running. So I take time to jog and pace the dog and rest if neccessary. Sometime just walk the rest of the journey if I noticed them struggling like some of our bad days. I just treat it like an casual exercise for both of us or three of us.

If I am training for competitive timing circuits, then I don;t bring them because the goals are different and it's not fair.

If you are talking about "running" that is not a natural long-distance gait for the Rottweiler, but a fit and well-conditioned Rottweiler should be able to trot for longer distances and times. The AD requires a 12 mile distance and in herding in the large pastures the dogs work for extended periods of time.

Mine was running consistantly 3 miles a day for 6 days. I retired him last month. He is now 7.5 years old. He gets bummed when I put on my jogging shoes and leave him behind.

Both my 6 year old and 2+ year old run with me on a daily basis. We go from 1-4 miles, but have built up gradually over time. My 6 year old even competed with me in a couple of road races this past summer. It is interesting though - his speed is the same whether we're on an uphill, flat or downhill.
