| ILP registration? Hi everyone I have a question about obtaining an ILP from the AKC for all 3 of my rottweilers. None of them have papers, so if I wanted to take part in an AKC event I would have to atleast have an ILP. What exactly are the up sides to having an ILP? I have downloaded the forms and have filled them out, but I am not going to mail them out until January - which is when Onchu will be 6 months old and spayed. All of my dogs are spayed, licensed, rabies cert, etc.... I thought an ILP would be nice to have too. How difficult is this to obtain? Let me know what you all know about ILP's, Thank you very much :)

| An ILP allows you to participate in AKC performance events. You cannot do so without one. That is about it. |

| IME, there's really nothing to it. I had almost no information about Gretchen when I sent for her ILP. . .nothing in the way of sire/dam info. All I knew was her height, approx. weight, and the fact that she looked like a Rottweiler. I sent in the photos of her front and side profile. . .apparently they thought she looks enough like a purebred Rottweiler to give her a number. Really, there's nothing to it. It's just a way of allowing unregisterable "purebreds" to compete in performance events. :) Audrey |

| The only 'down side' I can see to ILP's are that the dog has to be spayed, which means it can not compete in conformation. Not that I am against spaying dogs that are not fit to be bred, but I just wanted to point out that ILP dogs can not compete in conformation. They can compete in all the performance events though(obedience, agility, tracking & herding). As to how hard is it to get an ILP; I believe that the AKC is so money-crazy that they will literally give any dog an ILP# if it looks at all like one of the 150-some recognized breeds just to get the $35 or whatever the fee is. Maybe I am exaggerating a little! But, go ahead and give it a shot. :)

| Excuse me, but non-registered dogs cannot compete in conformation events anyway! ILPs are for non-registered dogs so that they can enjoy performance events. Period. If you are not planning on competing then there is no reason to acquire an ILP. If you own a non-registered dog, but would like the pleasure of formal competition, get the ILP and go to town. |

| DogLover: Since the AKC requries that dogs applying for an ILP be either spayed or neutered, it's obvious they aren't breeding material in the first place. It's ludicrous to talk about comformation showing and ILP in the same breath. There are a couple more events than those you listed (the total list is Obedience Trials, Tracking Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility, Earthdog Events and Hunting Tests)--tho, of course, some of these events aren't necessarily for Rotties. delila: The ILP is a cinch to obtain. Personally, I think DogLover is right about the AKC granting ILPs to dogs that even look remotely what you claim they are for financial reasons. |
