Fireworks and Your Dog

How does your dog handle fireworks on the 4th of July? This is Lola's first 4th with us, so I am not sure how she will react. She is fine with thunderstorms and we have had some bad storms recently so I am hoping it will not be an issue.

What are your tricks if your dog is frightened?

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

I have never had a Rottie afraid of fireworks or thunderstorms. Your girl will probably be fine.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

If there's something really scary, either sound or visual effect my dog stops to look where it's coming from. If she can't see anything scary she looks at me and if I'm calm she just keep doing what she did when it started. If I'm nervous she usually come close and growls softly while she's focusing on where the scary visual effect or sound comes from. If I tell her to 'leave it' she'll be quiet, but most lightly stay vigilantly checking out what she felt the need to warn about.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

When my puppy was 5 months old, my neighbour fired crackers continuously.

She didn't care & afraid.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

This is Lila's first Fourth as well. Last night, someone was setting of firecrackers near by. At first, she alerted to them, but after a few treats and some "What is that?" in a silly voice, she has been ignoring them. Even so, I have to work 10-6 tomorrow, and I think I'm going to crate her while we're out (she usually has a gated-off, puppy-proofed section of the house when she's alone).

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

Mine actually love to watch. I think the biggest thing you can do for her is to be non-reactive. She'll take cues from you. We'll be taking our rotties to watch with us.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

I have a "Songs to Make Dogs Happy" CD that I will play for them tonight. If you have not heard of this you should check it out, it is soooo adorable.

I will probably let Lola see the fireworks from a distance, there is a show close to my house. She is very curious and she will probably enjoy it. Some of the kids on the block started setting a few off last night and she just barked, so I am sure she will be fine.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

At 9 months old this will prove interesting . I have a STRANGE boy to start with . So far we have found that is he NOT afraid of gun fire it only makes him go into a protective state . The way we fond that out was someone in the neighborhood thought it was a good idea at 1 A.M. to start firing off his AK-47 ! And Joey was enraged ! Yet he gets afraid of a child's toy that plays music and moves around . We worked with the trainer on this subject and he still SHIES away from such things as dancing toys and remains attracted to things that make that kind of popping , banging type noise . The neighbor's have started lighting off their own fire works and he goes into a protective state . This is the first 4 th for him so it should prove interesting !

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

With Daisy, we just ignored the noise in the neighborhood. I did walk her right after dinner so we didn't need a long walk in the dark with rockets and firecrackers snapping and popping around us. By the time we made a quick trip to the yard at 11 PM, the noise in the neighborhood was finished.

We always watched the NYC show on TV and oooohed and aaahhhed at the music and fireworks.

We have a two-year old rescue pup now. He is very laid back, and we'll watch TV as usual and ignore the snap crackle pop of the neighborhood. I think dogs really pick up their owner's anxiety. Stay cool and calm.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

Brodie barks at the really loud ones, but other than that he really doesn't care.

Re: Fireworks and Your Dog

My girls LOVE to watch fireworks! I'm the one with the sensitive ears.

This year I have a Big Ole Boy, foster. I WON'T be taking him. He has worn me out, just teaching him some basic house manners.
