AKC marking determination

Ho everyone am brand new to the forum and am filling out my AKC registry paperwork for my 12 wk old male puppy. I think he is either mahogany or rust but I have not been able to find neither a written description nor a set of photos as a guideline. Could someone provide this data for me. Thanks so much.

Go with mahogany, sounds better in my opinion. He's very cute, what an expression..

Re: AKC marking determination

Just to confuse things, I would go rust!

And definitely a cutie pie!

What a darling baby!

I second rust. (I'd actually call him black and tan, myself... but the pics may be a bit washed out.)

Will you be taping his ears?

I second the mahogany... he should darken up a bit as he matures. What an adorable babe! In my experience, the breeder has always filled out that particular information on a registration form.

Re: AKC marking determination

Thanks guys! He has already darkened since those pics were taken and yes they were a little washed out. He is such a sweet boy. I'm still undecided but am leaning toward mahogany.

I have never taped years before and have had both a male and a female in the past. Does that help them form correctly?

Yes. If you bought your dog from a decent breeder, they should be able to show you how to do it.

Re: AKC marking determination

Jayneliz, I have been massaging his ears and they seem to be responding nicely. Thanks for the tip though. I now know how to tape if I need to.

RottsNscotts, I can't send a PM to you but I wanted to ask you a side question. I saw you live in Tacoma as well and was wondering if you do Schutzhund or know of a club nearby. Thanks.

Re: AKC marking determination

I have had nothing but problems finding a Sch club that will work Rotties near Tacoma; even kind of near Tacoma! I was driving down to the WORK club in Oregon until Marty Leggett (the helper/trainer) had to go out of the area for a while. He is back but I don't know if he has started training a group again. The WORK club withdrew from USRC.

There is a club in the Rochester area that Diane Jessup has been training with. She told me that they will work Rotties. I have not taken the time to track them down yet as I have been on swing shift so couldn't participate. Now that I am on graveyard shift, I will have to check into it!

Re: AKC marking determination

I would definitely say Rust for sure.

I thought the Breeder usually filled out the AKC paperwork? That's just how I've usually had it done :-)

Congrats :-)

That's what I did w/ Harley. His markings are definately darker and "mahogany" sounds very dignified.

Re: AKC marking determination

Any idea what his parents are listed as? I would think 2 mahogony parents would throw mahogony pups, but I'm not a breeder. I do, however, show my dogs, both mahogony, as listed by the breeder. Your pups color looks mahogony to me.

Makes no difference, in the end. He's adorable!
