Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

I may be fostering a Rott. I just saw some pictures and while the dog looks purebread, he has quite a bit of blue or black splotching on his tongue.

Is this possible for a purebread or could there be chow in there?

I wish I could post pics of him but this forum has a bizarre rule which doesn't allow it...

Also, he only weighs 73 lbs. They don't know how old he is other than that he is under 2 they think.

What age is 73lbs normal for a male? I am thinking 8-9 months?

Re: Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

My female has a black spot on her tongue....she is a rescue so there's the possibility she's mixed, but doubt it as her obedience instructor wanted me to get limited registration on her from AKC, and she was a judge at conformation shows. She's really gorgeous!
I pulled this off the internet:
Breeds known to have members with spotted tongues

Airedale, Akita, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Malinois, Bichon Frise
Bouvier de Flandres, Bull Mastiff, Cairn Terrier, Chinese Shar-Pei, Collie, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher,
English Setter, Eurasier, Fila Brasileiro, Flat-coated Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter, Great Pyrenees,
Irish Setter, Kai Ken, Keeshond, Korean Jindo, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, Mountain Cur, Newfoundland, Pomeranian,
Pug, Rhodesian Ridgeback Rottweiler, Shiba Inu, Siberian Husky, Tibetan Mastiff, Thai Ridgeback

As to weight... Rotti's bulk up sometime around three. We were told my male was about 1 1/2 when we adopted him and he weighed about 73 lbs. Over the next couple of years he bulked up and is now around 87-90 lean weight.

One of the males we fostered for Rottie rescue had a black spot on his tongue. He looked like a Rottweiler to me, tho a badly bred one, conformation wise.

Our rescue, Greta has two black spots on her tongue.

She was the product of BYB. Hmmmm...this topic could make for an interesting poll. Black spots...yes or no...well bred or poorly bred.

Re: Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

Our boy Jake has black spots on his tongue as well......he's not the finest specimen of a rottweiler - but a rottweiler he is.......and we've heard "he must have ChowChow in him" because the entire world of ill-informed dog-people believe that breed is the only breed with black on their tongue.........our lab has black spots on her tongue too

I dug up a photo of Jake's tongue and posted it in my pictures......you can't see the darkest spots very well - but he looks like he ate a black sharpie! :o) And the black lab is there too - sporting her spotted tongue ;o)

Our new pup is well bred, and he has a nice black spot on the back of his tongue. First Rott we've had with this, though.

Re: Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

I was intrigued by the question.....so just made everyone in the house stand for exam It appears none of them have any spot on the tongue.....a couple have some mottling near the back of their mouths but other than that no spots. All very well bred show dogs........

Re: Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

Oskar is a rott x mutt and has alot of black spots on his tongue. Pretty sure he has no chow in him! He is 3 1/2 and the spots are still growing. He started out with one black spot when he was born and now almost half his tongue is black. There are a couple of tongue shots in the gallery. I love his spots!

When I was a kid we had a black lab that bit through her tongue, the resulting scar was black. I looked like a black spot.

Re: Can a Pure Bread Rottweiler have Blue or Black Markings on Tongue?

I've had a lot of rescues- all with spots on their tongues- they were poorly bred, but I don't think they were mixed with anything. I've also had 2 Rotties from reputable breeders that had small spots on their tongues.
