I may be adopting a part Rottie--need advice.

I have been looking for a rescue Rottie for quite sometime now and I found a 17 week old male Rottie mix, he is marked exactly like a Rott, but his nose and ears are longer. No one is sure what other breed he may have in him. He now weighs 37 lbs, how big would you say that he would be when fully grown? I have a ten month old female Mastiff who will probably grow to be around 160 lbs, if this Rottie mix only grows to be around 70 or 80 lbs will he be too small for my Mastiff to play with? I don't want her hurting him. She is not an aggressive dog but she loves to play.

How nice that you are thinking of rescuing a pup! I do not think the size of the pup will matter; it sounds as if he is not going to be a tiny guy, and he will probably be robust because he has some rottie in him. It is likely that the female Mastiff will run the household as far as the dogs are concerned, although if she is playfuul they will likely have a good time. Females tend to be the boss in a mixed-gender household. They'll probably play nicely together, but when the female has had enough she will let the little guy know! If she is well-socialized with other dogs, she will be a good influence on your new guy in that she will teach him what is appropriate play behavior and what is not.

Each of my males play differently with female dog guests than they do with each other. There seems to be alot more 'posturing' and 'play aggression' between the two males. By the way, the 80 lb 3 year old male is the boss over the 105 lb 2 year old male. Bottom line is they both know that I am the boss over both of them.

I would not worry about the size either.

Here are my females weights at that age:

Delila (Rottweiler) 17 weeks - 43 lbs
Laika (Rottweiler/Husky) 17 weeks - 35 lbs

There weights now are:

Delila (Rottweiler) 12 months - 90 lbs
Laika (Rottweiler/Husky) 6 months - 47 lbs

We also have a male Rottweiler Odin who weighs 120+ at 22 months.

The weight difference does not matter. All we did was train the larger dogs to play "nice" with the smaller dogs. That is the "command" we use - "nice". We also have cats so the dogs have to be "nice" to them too.

In my opinion a 17 week old rottweiler mix can weigh anywhere from meduim size (40-60 lbs) or large (60+). It all depends on what the mix is.

I have heard that a good rule to follow is to take the dogs weight at 16 weeks and double it to guess full grown size. That would land you at about 70 lbs. This theory is not that far off. Delila was 40 lbs at 16 weeks, and now weighs 90 lbs - so the guess was 10 lbs off.

Always remember though a slim dog is a healthy dog. A dog will only get as large as it is genetically programmed to. Feeding will not effect this.

Good luck with your new baby and have fun :)

I too think they will play together fine. I have three dogs,
Soapie - chow mix, 35 lbs.
Buddy - Rottie mix, 70 lbs.
Miller - yellow lab, 120 lbs.

Little Soapie is the dominant one and I have to actually watch HER around the other two sometimes! She bit Buddy's ear once and drew blood.

The only time I was worried about a size difference was when Miller started to try to play with a neighbor's five pound white dog (Bichon Friese? whatever!). I felt he could have crushed the little pooch without realizing it so I stopped the play.

Your two will get along great, I'm sure, and delight you with their bizarre games. I know my three do!

Good luck!
