Pure Breed or Mix

We got “Shadow” our pup literally from under our car last week. We took her to the vet for a general check up. To our surprise the vet declared that the pup is a Rott. What do u guys think? Is Shadow a pure breed?

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

Awww...she's a cutie.
She looks like a mix, and I would guess German Shepherd mixed in. I've seen Rottie/Shep mixes and they often look like this. Her face is really black with no markings and the markings she has are really light on her chest and legs.

Once she get's older it will be easier to see.

I agree with Gina. This is def a wait and see situation.

Rottweiler mix. No eyebrow dots. And possibly no cheek dots either? Darned adorable though! Happy thought you didn't run over her! Oh MY! I like the name Shadow for her, especially since she was in the "shadows under" your car. Such a cutie patootie! Fallen in love yet?

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

I see more German Shepherd than rottweiler.

She is VERY cute!

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

My rottie doesn't have eye dots.. but she is definately all Rottweiler (shape and bones - plus rescue indicated she had paper, but they wouldn't give it so prior owners were not disclosed). So I would go with the wait and see group.

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

u can't really rely on the marking as some breeds may or may not have the corrected marking that a rottweiler would.. that is what would be considered non standard to the AKC for the breed but u'll never know although it resembles a GS but who know at this point... but 1 thing for sure shes adorable

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

Thanks for your valued comments. We never expected it to be a pure breed. Just wanted to reconfirm the vets finding.

Thanks.

Regards,

James.

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

Wait and see? Wait and see what, exactly? Either I'm confused or someone mentioned DNA testing while I was out of the room. Oh yeah... People were waiting for her to grow into adulthood. I get it now.

Vets will give a "best guess" but they are not authorities any more than we are. And he already mentioned Rottie.

It may always be a mystery as to whether it's pure or not. I vote with the "nots" over poorly bred. Rottie/Shepherd mix is a possibility, IMHO, based on the head structure. It's more Shepherd-like, than Rottie.

Either way, I'm certain she's quite capable of melting many a heart, including mine.

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

I also believe you have either a GS puppy or GS mix puppy. Wait and see what she grows up to be awfully cute though.

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

Oh my goodness, she is so cute, she looks like a Rottweiler/shepard mix 2 me if she had the brown brows i would think 100% rottie, but I am no expert

Re: Pure Breed or Mix

Here's a picture of a puppy we named Brutus. He came from a box in front of the grocery store. Daddy was a rottie and momma was a Belgian shepherd. She was there keeping an eye on the pups. As he got older who would have guessed that his ears would stand up like a shepherd! (Sorry I don't have that picture.) Your little girl definately looks sweet and I hope you will love her no matter what! (As Brutus was loved.)
