Angry Rottweiler/Pitbull mix

The other day I ran into an old friend and we talked for a few minutes before she started telling me about the puppies her pitbull had. She went on to say that her boyfriend was planning to dump all 7 of the puppies. After hearing that I became irate at even the thought of such. Her defense for this heartless man was..."no one is going to want a rotti/pit mix, they're to mean, hell nobody around here wants either breed, full blooded or not". Sorry, but that's a pathetic excuse imo. I found wonderful homes for 6 of the puppies with families who know about one or both of the breeds and I decided to take home the last little girl who was left. She is wonderful and very loving and Anna adores her, however, we have friends and even some relatives who allow they will never come by as long as we have 'Mae'. I truly believe that ANY dog can turn on its owner....breed doesn't matter. I couldn't sit by knowing the fate of those poor little pups and do nothing. My husband and I feel we done the right thing by bringing Mae home and we do not regret our decision regardless of what some 'friends' may say. Any suggestions for a great come back to those words of...'well we wont be over as long as you have that dog'........would be greatly appreciated. I, personally am sick of hearing that. I believe each dog should be given a chance. All opinions on this are welcomed! Thanks

Maybe try saying "it's your loss." I'm of the opinion that there's no changing some people's biases...

Well.....geez.....since they are so sure of that, why the heck did they allow the litter to be born? They should have spayed the female and neutered the male.

Well, of course it does....and especially with mixed breeds because you do not know what that mix is going to produce in temperament - reliability in characteristics is the reason purebred dogs have been developed in the first place.

Actions speak louder than words, so I would just say "Okay, if that's the way you want it...", and make damn sure I raised that puppy to be the best canine good citizen on the block. When they see that, either they will come around or they won't.....and I wouldn't spend one minute stressing over what they think. Spend that time raising your puppy well instead.

I would tell them "that's fine cuz I hate cleaning up for company anyway".

I SWEAR the instant I vaccum here another carpet of black fur appears out of nowhere!

Smile sadly and shake your head while saying, "On, that's too bad. We'll miss you."

Re: Rottweiler/Pitbull mix

Just wanted to thank you for saving these pups...one of my favorite fosters was a rotti/pit girl. Sugar LOVED children and adopted to a family that ran a day care. I always find it sad when people demonize a dog without even meeting it.
Wish I had a snappy come-back, but I think I'd simply tell them that "ya' know, people USED to think the world was flat too, till they actually went and looked. I have a feeling, if you met Mae, you'd change your mind."

Re: Rottweiler/Pitbull mix

In my experience, seeing is believing.
I take my dog lots of places where there are lots of people. I always carry treats with me, and almost always we end up "performing" tricks for someone. We really gather crowds at parks or little league games.
The best thing you can do is to take your pup to age appropriate training, and keep going.
Along with obedience teach cute tricks like shake, roll over, wave, spin, balance the ball on your snout, crawl, roll (rolling a ball along the ground with your nose) walk backwards, etc.
Make her a model dog so that everyone who meets her will love her.
Inevitably after meeting her and having fun with her, people will ask what breed she is. Smile a big smile and say she's half pitbull half rottweiler.
I do have to wonder about the idiots that bred their dog, the chances that their pit went in heat and the first and only dog that got to her was a rott? Perhaps they were going to make a fortune on designer dogs? A pitweiller? And nobody wanted one?
At our shelter about a month ago two litters of pups were dropped off, one border collie/aussie pups and one havanese/shitzu. Do you call those a haveashit? I am almost sure someone thought they were having designer dogs and when they could not sell them in the paper they just dumped them at the shelter. Well one of the litters brought in distemper, and our shelter was closed for adoptions for three weeks because of it.
I get so damned mad at people I just wanna scream.
I am glad your Mae found a great home and thank you for finding great homes for the others too. Please pass along all advice you get here to the other proud new parents.

I almost spit coke all over my keyboard!

Here we see a lot of BYB small dog mixes because people will buy small dogs - even the shelter rarely see small dogs stay very long. Unfortunately the other issue is that I've seen these dogs go for 40$ more than the shelter adoption fee and the impulsive dog buyer will think it's not so much to pay to get a dog NOW rather than wait for one to come in at the shelter.

Several!
"Oh dear. I'm very sorry. We'll certainly miss your company."

"This is Mae's home. Sadly, it's your choice to decline our company, as that would include Mae as well."

"Really? What ever for? We've been working on her CGC, so she'll have a certificate to proove she has better manners than a good number of humans, I know."

"That's OK. We'll be busy training her for agility (obedience, rally-o, carting, etc.) We won't have as much time for company anymore."

"Well, you think about it, then. We'll invite you next year for Mae's birthday get together, just in case you change your mind."

"Oh my! <cover the dog's ears> Mae, darlin', did you hear that? Maligned before you've had a chance, you poor thing."

"Yeah, right! She's a teddy bear in a Rott'n-bull suit, eh? Tell me now, wasn't your great-great-great uncle hanged for horse theiving? That's guilt by association too. You plannin' on thievin' some horses, Bub?"

Or, last but nor least... "Yeah? Send pictures, then. So I don't forget what you look like."

Have fun! This girls is an athlete. Best get her a cart and a harness and let her pull a kid or two down the street.

Re: Rottweiler/Pitbull mix

Man, I just can't believe the audacity of some people. Bigotry is not exclusive to other people, it can be applied to art, music, animals, and home decor. It's inexcusably rude and ignorant and frankly I wouldn't want someone who would say such a thing to me in my house. But that's just me. It is so painful to see friends behave in such a disappointing way. Tell them that you won't be coming over to their house as long as they own all that dangerous ignorance.

Oh, geez, I hope you made her a deal... that you'd find homes for the pups IF she would promise to spay her dog. You're an angel, TMarie, but are you going to go through this again next year with your old friend ???

Best wishes to you all including Mae.

Re: Rottweiler/Pitbull mix

My Dad and I took care of a rottweiler/chow(sp) mix. I tried to keep an open mind, but that particular dog took A LOT of work.

After that experience, I can say that I will never own a chow(sp). The guy who bought the dog was an idiot. He told us it was a rottie, which is why we were best choice of all his friends to take care of her while he was away, but the guy who sold it to him(should be in jail in my opinion) tricked him.

It looked enough like a rotte, except for the small nose, the long curly tail(I know that rotties have thier tails docked, but this wasn't a rottie tail), and the spots on the tongue. Like I said, idiot.

The rottweiler/pitt mix I met when I was a kid, however, was one of the coolest dogs I've ever taken care of. I was camping with my 'rents and one of their friends let me walk his dog. He told me that the dog normally hated kids, but I seemed to be an exception. That dog was great!

A little bit of a side story: When we were taking care of our friend's rottie/chow mix, who was a puupy at the time, Sammy couldn't stop trying to nibble the puppy's tail! Sammy has been raised with a rat terrier, another tailess breed, so she was utterly perplexed by a tail. She would follow the puppy around, trying to bite her tail right off!
