| normal height range for male rotties?? i measured willow today..he is 28inches tall shoulder to floor and still growing.he is only 10 months :-) he is also 28inches long..from shoulder to back end,so hes quite long too. i was wondering what the normal height/length range is for male rotties. and when do they stop growing height-wise and start filling out?? he is taller than most fully grown rotties i have seen. i knew he was going to be big,cos he had the biggest paws id ever seen on a puppy, which are still getting bigger :-) im just curious about this. |

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? Male Rotties usually stop gaining height after neutering or 6months of age. When did you get him neutered (as in at what age?). |

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? If he was neutered young, actually, it can really affect how tall he is in that the lack of testosterone does not tell the growth plates when to close, potentially making him far taller than his unneutered/neutered later on brothers. I have a perfect example of this in my second litter - the boy is 29 inches tall, he was neutered at 6 months. His 3 brothers, one is still intact, one was neutered at 2, and the other at a year, are FAR shorter, stockier, less leggy than he is. I would guess your guy is very close to stopping growth in his height, filling out will take a few years however. Kristi

males grow in height til 2 YEARS old, albeit slowly and not as noticeable after 12-18 months. females grow in height til 18 months but again anything after 12 months is slow. usually you will notice that all of a sudden their rear is higher than the front then one day they even out, that's a growth spurt. Head and body width and maturity don't come til after 3 years and in some lines not til 4 or 5 years.(and My friends female greater Swiss Mtn Dog grew 2 INCHES between 2 years and 3 yearsof age.!)

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? a male rottweiler by breed standard should meassure between 24-27 inches in height awith mid range being preferred. there can be individuals shorter or taller than standard, and proportion is more important than height alone. the lenght to tall ratio should be a little longer than taller. you meassure a dog from floor to the top of the withers(between/ around shoulder blades/neck meets. a dog usually grows in height till about 10-12 months and then maybe gather another 1/8-1/2 inch as they mature as they fill out(usually as they hit 2 to 3 yrs depending on the line). if neutered early they tend to be leggier and thinner looking than those kept intact or neutered after 2 yrs of age.

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? Dogs, 24-27 inches, (61-68cm with 65-66 being the most desirable). Bitches, 22-25 inches, (56-63 cm with 60-61 being the most desirable). Proportion is important. Measurement from the posternum (breast bone) to the ischiatic tuberosity (rearmost projection of the rump) is slightly longer than the height of the dog/bitch at the withers. The most desirable proportion is 9H - 10L. Depth of the chest is approx 50% of the height of the dog. Bone and muscle mass is sufficient to balance his frame, giving a compact, powerful appearance. Lack of proportion is a serious fault, as are oversized, undersized dogs, or reversal of sex characteristics. (bitchy dogs, or doggy bitches) As mentioned, this breed does not mature in a years time. I love big paws!

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? why sadly?? hes not overweight,so there isnt extra pressure on his joints. if anything people tell me he must be a cross because hes lean and quite leggy at the moment.. hes not though..but i think people that havent had rotties expect them to reach their adult size in their first few months lol i love my boy no matter what his size will eventually be..but i really think hes got a few more inches to go..he's taller than most already and we see alot in my area. |

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? Sadly... because you seem so excited about it. Like it's a good thing? It's not. Quote:

It's also to his advantage that he's a bit leggy and lean. But bigger isn't better, with our breed. There is a certain propensity towards hip dysplasia. Being larger/taller, especially if he was deliberately bred that way, (do you know if he was?) for some reason, tends to bring that aspect out a bit more. So, yes... sadly, as I wish your dog to be one of the lucky ones who remains pain free and free of HD, arthritis, etc. You see, one of my girls has some (currently) mild arthritis in one hip. It will get worse as she ages. My dog was bred to standard, thru OFA good sire and dam, with all the usual health clearances. She's the only one, not with HD but arthritis, that we know of anywhere along the line. Arthritis can be genetic, we don't know. I love her with every fiber of my being. Before the x-rays, we showed her. She was pointed. Once we knew, we had her spayed immediately and keep her on the lighter side. She's going to be 7 soon. She is on medication to lube up the joints, of course. So far no limping, no signs. But they will come, whether I want or not. I hope you never have to face something like that with your dog....that's all.

| Re: normal height range for male rotties?? oh i think youve mistaken the way i said it..of course i dont want him to be sooo big it causes him to be in poor health.. i would never want that, thats why i posted this. im not sure if he was bred purposely to be as big as he is?? as i got him from a rescue centre. i didnt get any papers with him as the breeder was reluctant to hand them over, after practically begging we eventually got his kennel club certificate thing with his registered kennel club name on but thats all i have. yes i do love willow and would be lost without him!! i try and do the best (or what i believe is the best) for him in every situation. |
