| Re: Another ignorant person Well I didn't realize how ignorant some of my friends are till yesterday. One less person my friends list ![]() I took Janus with me over to a friend's house. First time he met Janus. He asked me about his training and if I was planning on breeding him and that he thinks Janus is a handsome boy and would want one of his pups if I decide to breed him (which he kept pushing the issue, and I told him it was never going to happen, cause he's going to get fixed). Then he started talked to me about how I "should be training Janus, that I wasn't doing it propperly cause Janus doesn't fear me". I told him how stupid of an idea that was and that I didn't need a dog that fears me, but actually respects me. He then continued to say "here let me show you" and he stood up... before he was completely standing I myself had stood up and called Janus to my feet. I warned him if he ever came near my dog to "show me" anything that I would be showing him a few things myself. Then he tells me that I should have someone dressed as a cop and teach Janus how to bite the person dressed as a cop I was beyond myself and told him that if I had anyone dressed as a cop, it would be to show Janus that they are good people and to be trusted unlike him. Needless to say I left there with those parting words and left all of Janus's chew toys and food. I just grabbed him and his leash and my purse and left without another word. I'm surprised I didn't say or do anything else to get my point across at how POed I was with his remarks. Unfortunately I know that when I finally move to Florida, that I will be surrounded by more ignorant people with those same thoughts Ignorant people... unfortunately they're everywhere.

| Great stories, all! I loved Janus' Mom's story - it compels me to tell my own! My 2 year old male, Tier, is 137 lbs, but thinks he is a 13.7 lb. lap dog. Everyone in my vet's office just loves him to death, and makes no secret of the fact that he is their favorite dog client. Work basically stops when we visit, so everyone can come get their hugs and kisses. Both vets even get on the floor with him so he can get in their laps. It's all very silly and sweet. We went in for hot spot problems recently, and we walked past a room with a mom and kids in it. The 2 older kids were probably 3 and not quite school age. When we walked past, they halfway tumbled out of the doorway and I heard the girl say, "Whoa! Look at that big doggie!" I stopped and asked if they wanted to visit, but they just shook their heads and looked wide-eyed at them. I shrugged and said, "ok!" and went to our room. As we Rottie parents know, babies and kids are much-loved entities and practically irresistible for them, so, predictably, Tier was pulling on his leash as much as I'd let him, with his head poked around the corner of the door, looking longingly at the kids who were still standing in amazement. About this time, the office manager came from the back and saw what was going on, so she knelt down by Tier, petting him, and asked the kids if they wanted to come see him. She told them how w onderful and sweet he was and that he was a "good dog". They were persuaded to come over, and by the end of it, they were poking, hugging, giggling, petting and even straddling his back while he was at a sit and laying on him. I don't know who was happier - the kids or Tier. He even showed them how he could shake with both hands (this is a favorite party trick of his that he breaks out when he's trying hard to impress). After about 10 or 15 minutes of this, the mother finally stuck her head out to see what all the commotion was, and when she saw Tier, she audibly gasped, her hand flew to her mouth and in a panicky voice, asked the office manager, "Are they okay?!" The manager responded, "Pfft, oh yes. This is a great dog." Yay for Rottie friendly vet offices! The mother ended up coming over with a baby in a stroller and meeting Tier for herself. The only slight boo-boo was when he snuck a kiss on the baby and made her a little nervous. I thought I had him, but that tongue is about a foot long, I swear. So Tier was a great Rottie ambassador that day, and hopefully helped change the mind of at least one family. This is the same dog that an opposing soccer coach told me was a "dangerous animal" and should be kept at home. I try to be a good ambassador, as well, but I admit that I laughed openly at him. :D |

| Re: Another ignorant person That's a fantastic story!! I was waiting for you to say that the mom screamed and yanked her kids back and all that non-sence. LOL It's so nice to hear that she met him for herself :) On a side note, why in the world would you have that many kids at the vets and NOT know where they are for 10-15 minutes?! Especially that young too...yikes! lol |

I sure never lost track of my kid at that age - especially in a place full of unfamiliar animals! |

| Re: Another ignorant person This is off topic but people who think they it's great to take their pack of children everywhere and not watch them are really annoying. There are just some places that kids (especially the ages above) don't need to be. The nail salon, the movie theater at the 10 o'clock show, and the vet's office all come to mind. |

I have YET to meet one child who's parents have showed them how to properly meet another dog. That's very scary. Now my one year old doesnt get the concept of all of that, and she will run right another dog, so she isn't allowed to come to the vet with me...she's wayyy to curious. LOL |

It has decreased since I have had Brinks, but now that he is getting bigger, I'm getting concerned it may begin again. I swear they are teaching their kids to be terrified of dogs as well. When I walk Brinks, all the neighbourhood kids will come over to see him. They all know to wait until he is sitting, then they can pet him. These kids that live next door will run like hell when they see ANY dog. Brinks is always leashed and walks very well on a leash, but they run like hell regardless. Makes no sense to me at all. I hear they're moving in a couple months.......lets hope its true. |
