Re: too hot??

If the weather is hot I walk my dogs early in the morning or late in the evening. I never take them out in the heat of the day. For their sake and mine.

Re: too hot??

I usually walk Janus in the morning before the bugs come out and before it starts getting too hot. And like Anne said, for his sake as well as mine.

Re: too hot??

I do not deal with heat well at all. So my rule of thumb is if it too hot for me, it's too hot for my dogs. It's usually quick play in the morning before the sun comes up and a nice slow leisurely walk at night after the sun goes down.

Re: too hot??

Mine don't seem to care much, but they are adults, and I carry plenty of water. They are used to hiking. We stop often to rest, but they are always willing to go on.

So my answer is, hydration and conditioning. Mine grew up taking shorter hikes as pups and longer later. We do it at a leisurely pace. Usually there is a lake for swimming, too! Special fun!

At home our fenced yard is well shaded, and a bit cooler than full sun. We have a kiddie swimming pool filled for then to lounge about in. Occasionally I freeze empty juice cartons with ice and put a few "floaters" into the pool. Twice the fun! I've even frozen treats inside.

Re: too hot??

It's hot... but not too hot to be worried, as long as they have shade and plenty of water.

I did notice my lad is moulting loads though...so regular grooming is in order to keep the coat light by removing all the loose hair!!

As others have suggeted, walk early/late rather than in the heat of the day and take for a swim if possible!
