I have a question about Toys...

I wasn't sure where to post this question, but I was wondering about dog toys for Rotties, besides the Kong Toys. We try and supply the pups with a good amount of raw hides and toys. The problem is that everything that we buy, Valek, the 12 month old, destroys it. He just tears it apart. We spent $20 on a Jolly Ball because it was heavy duty and had a handle, so he could easily grab the ball, he chewed the handle off in just a couple of weeks of having it. It lasted as long a few weeks because we would take it away from him when he started chewing it up. About a month ago we bought them two stuffed ducks, they were destroyed by Valek in about a day and a half. I just wanted to know is anyone knows where to get durable toys for the dogs. Believe me, I am grateful that he chews the toys rather than my cupboards and furniture, and it doesn't bother me as much as it does my husband, so any help would be great.

Thank you,

Jenn

PetEdge: Push-N-Play Balls
This ball will last you forever. I have the red one (middle size); it is really hard plastic so it can't be chewed . Also, you can fill them with sand or water to make them harder to push around.

What KONG do you have? I would get the black one; it is supposedly extra tough PetEdge: Extreme Kong Dog Toy

These toys have also lasted a while:
PetEdge: Kong Bounzer Balls
PetEdge: Multi-Pet Multi-Colored Nobbly Wobbly II Rubber Balls
PetEdge: Nylabone Double Action Chews

also, we buy the big rope toys

Thank you for your recommendations.

I was leary about buying the big ropes, I thought I had heard somewhere that they were not good for the dogs teeth. Is that an accurate statement?

The Kong Toys are ok, but he doesn't seem to like it as much as he likes chewing on a stuffed toy. I may just have to start buying one new Kong toy a week and see which one he likes best.

Thanks again,
Jenn

Re: I have a question about Toys...

At Petsmart I found these ultra durable toys that aren't made of rubber. My boy really loves squeakers, but unfortunately he also loves destroying all the soft toys that have squeakers. So I decided to try out this new toy I found. It is a soft toy, but really tough. Gary got the red lobster and we have already had it for a month. The claws still squeak too! There are other critters though, give them a try! Here's a link so you can see what they look like, but I bought mine from petsmart.

Re: I have a question about Toys...

I have found that the cheapest most loved toy around here is a jug. I rinse very well all the bleach, laundry detergant and fabric softener jugs then give them to the crew. They carry them, toss them and generally have a ball with them. When they get to the point they can pull pieces off, they go in the recycling can. Best toy there is!

Shybird; do they ever cut their mouths on the plastic jugs? That would be my concern, I will save my next jug for Nisha!

Re: I have a question about Toys...

Extra large "Tire biters" are great for the heavy chewers. I wouldn't recommend plastic jugs and bottles etc, very shredable and toxic.

No cuts yet. Maybe because I take them away when the start to get pieces off.

Re: I have a question about Toys...

I buy a lot of toys quite frequently. And, I keep several of each for the dogs. I have about 4 booda rope bones/toys, a few nylabones, tire biters, kong rubber balls, a big boingo ball, rubber rings, pretty much an assortment of different things but definitely more than one of each. Plush toys and squeakers wouldn't make it for 5 minutes here, and a wubba was completely destroyed within 30 minutes.

Re: I have a question about Toys...

Anything free is in our budget range so we like:

old socks with an old washcloth stuffed in them, then knotted
heavy plastic tubs or bottles (like the Costco peanut butter jugs, you can stuff another toy in it and she'll go nutty trying to pull it out)
bubble wrap (only lasts a few minutes but it's fun)
plastic tubes (like water hose or vacuum cleaner-type hose) (all clean of course)... if you blow through one end or make noises through it, Mango will really get excited about it.

We quit using the colorful store-type rope toys after I had to help pull long threads out of "her other end" one day.

Re: I have a question about Toys...

Coco likes the puzzle jug and molecular ball, they are both toys that you can fill with kibble or treats. She gets both of her meals from her puzzle jug, it takes her about 20-25 minutes to empty it. For a rottie she's not that aggressive with her toys, at almost 9 months old she still has the majority of her toys I bought her on her first trip home. When she rips a hole in a stuffed toy I take it and sew it up and give it back.

These toys look great, we will definitely be buying a couple of these for the dogs.

Thank you,

You have some great ideas, I wanted to do the old sock thing, but my husband thought that would reinforce him chewing our socks, so we decided to scrap that idea, but maybe I will give it a shot.

Thanks,
Jenn

Re: I have a question about Toys...

We have had the same problem...

Our rottweiler, Max, LOVES stuffed toys, but they are history in a matter of minutes or days. We will still get him some every now and then just because he likes them so much.

Some of the items that we have found that have been successfully durable were a couple of huge nylabone bones. They are about $20 a piece at Petsmart, but my dog loves to chew on them. He thinks its a rawhide without the mess or risk. Those are some of his favorites, and they are indestructable!! So well worth the money.

Also, Petsmart has these tires attached to ropes that are great for outside. He loves to sling it around and smack himself with the tire :) They had these in different sizes and he hasn't torn it up yet.

He does not like the big black kong we got him...it is for 90 lbs and up I think...however, our 5 lb yorkie LOVES to run around with it in the backyard!!!

As for ropes, mine always rips them apart and then I'm picking up tons of yarn from around the house, even with the giant ropes, although he does enjoys them.

Re: I have a question about Toys...

Another place to go is goodwill or the salvation army. Usually all the stuffed animals are less than 50 cents apiece. Just make sure to remove any plastic eyes. Our old GSD would shred any baby he got(no matter how well made), so this was far more cost effective than the stuffed toys at the pet store. He could have cared less where it came from, he just loved to rip them apart, pull out the stuffing and run around with the "pelt" for awhile.
