Most often when they start sexually maturing. It depends if there are other male dogs around that he sees lifting their legs...they often copy the big boys.

My guy started around 6 months, but he saw many "big boys" and often played and socialized with them. I've seen some start around 12 months or even later.
It also depends on the age they are neutered. If they are neutered before they are sexually mature, they may never lift their leg.

How old is your dog?

Gina

Re: Male pups

My male is 12 months and just started lifting his leg about a month or two ago, he doesn't lift his leg every time he goes, only occasionally.

Re: Male pups

Gary just turned 8 months and still isn't lifting his leg to pee. He does live with two other males who lift their leg to pee, but he just hasn't figured it out, or he doesn't care! Gary isn't neutered yet either and I really wonder if he is ever going to.

But heck, if he never lifts his leg to pee I will actually be happy with that. I don't need my guy running around marking everything anyways!

Re: Male pups

Max stared lifting his leg at about 3-4 months old (learned it from his beagle friend). At first it was only about an inch off the ground. Too cute Now he nearly topples himself over to get his leg high enough

Re: Male pups

Dodge was just about a year when I got him, and sort of half way cocked his leg up, more like just picked one foot up off the ground. He was neutered shortly before I brought him home.
Now if he has to pee really bad he still just kind of picks one up off the ground, but if he wants to "mark" something he hikes it up really really high.
My daughters dog still squats unless he is marking over another dog, then he really lifts it up, almost over his head.
I know some fully mature males who are neutered and still pee like puppies. Guess it depends on the dog.

Re: Male pups

Just so you know...not all males lift their legs, actually. Yeah, I know. Big blow to the male ego, here, but it's true. That goes for non neutered dogs as well.

One possibility for a non neutered dog not to lift is HD. It may be uncomfortable. Primarily, I agree. Neutering prior to sexual maturity may have an affect. But that's not always true either. Thus, an enigma!

Take heart, most do eventually lift a leg. I'd say somewhere around 9-12 months, some as early as 4-6 months, some as late as 18 months.

Since I'm babbling, anyway...want to explain why "the enforcer" female pup has lifted her leg from the day I got her? She's 7.

Re: Male pups

Most boys I know begin to leg lift anywhere between 6mos to a year or so.

I've witnessed two youngsters of 7 weeks begin to leg lift regularly; one, a yellow lab that boarded at the kennel, and the other is Buzz from my B litter.

I've seen dogs neutered at a young age that don't lift their leg, or only do so sporadically.

All my bitches do it. lol

One of my males started at about 10 months another at 14 months and I have a 7 month old that is starting. I too had females in the past that lifted their legs. One was a very strong willed gal. lol

Re: Male pups

Chino started at about 7 months if I remember correctly. Enjoy it while he still "squats"... when they start lifting their leg it seems they have to mark everyting in sight!
