Does color matter?

My Rottweiler is black and mahogany(sp?) and I/he gets a lot of compliments b/c of it. Are richer markings prefered in general or is it just personal preference?

Re: Does color matter?

I like the richer/darker mahogany too!! I think if you will read AKC standard I believe it might be the preference with faults being a dog that is lacking of appropriate color or I believe they term faults as a straw/too light tan colored rottweiler.

Each time we have gone to a sieger show the adrk judges always comment about "rich red/brown markings" on my guys.....so I think it is a judge favorite too!!

Re: Does color matter?

Jett too has the darker mahogany markings, I have received quite a few compliments at the Rotty Club on her colour.

Re: Does color matter?

Ummm.....guys?? I'm not looking to throw a wrench into this thread, but isn't mahogany the lighter of the preferred color range? I know that a piece of mahogany wood does have a somewhat reddish color, but with a definite tan base, whereas the color 'rust' is typically a deep reddish-brown color. (?)

I don't know, maybe I have it backwards. I have always wondered about this myself, it would be interesting to see what everyone else thinks.

Regards,
MK

P.S. One thing is for sure, the 'straw/tan' color is out of the preffered range for conformation.

No.

According to the standard:

"Color
Always black with rust to mahogany markings."

Hi AngelBunny,

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think you've really answered the question that I was asking about. I know that the color must be 'rust to mahogany', that is not in question. Which one is lighter or darker, however, is not addressed in the AKC breed standard. (?) Which is why I suppose I've always been unsure about it. That, and the fact that I'm not, nor have I ever been involved in any AKC events. LOL..........

The excerpt you posted is from the 'color' section, whereas when reading the 'general appearance' paragraph at the beginning, they only mention 'rust', as if that is the preffered color. (?) Again, which one is that??

I'm not disputing your answer or anyone else's on this thread, I'm sure you guys know more about it than I do. I'm just trying to gain a clearer understanding of which colors are 'officially' considered the lighter/darker of the two, as I have always wondered about that. The truth is that to me, color wise, the two are BOTH fairly dark & reddish colors, so obviously there's a relatively fine line between them. It's just that when I picture the color of rust, (Or a rust colored crayon, for that matter) I see the same tone in my mind as one of the 'darker' Rotties. Which I also agree, are quite stunning to look at!

Maybe it's me.........LOL!!

Re: Does color matter?

Mike, no worries, I'm a bit confused too... I looked up the difference on the Google Images site. It looks like mahogany is the darker, rust the lighter... To me, the rust doesn't feel like a good description of the color it is, but that is what they are calling it... Oh well, like you, I have no idea about showing, so it's all confusing to me!

Re: Does color matter?

I think the mahogany is a "richer" color.

The color range for markings that's acceptable is lightest to darkest--rust (the lighest) to mahogany (the darkest).
