New here--with a question...

Hello all! I am an at-home mom who has (human) four kids, a cocker spaniel, and we just adopted a 3 y/o Rottiweiler from the Humane Society. She's a great dog, very loving and smart. I plan on signing us up for obedience classes soon so we can learn more together. I have owned two lab/rotti crosses in the past (they passed away about 3.5 yrs. ago) and they were really sweet boys. I know, I know, they weren't all Rott, but it's a start, lol!

Anyway, my question. The ppl at the HS had here listed as a purebred Rotti, but looking at her body, I'm thinking, she *might* be mixed with something. She just doesn't seem to fit the standard the more I look at her. She weighs 72 lbs and is 22.5 in. at the withers. My hubby measured how long she was last night and from the base of her neck to her stump (but not including the stump), she's 27 in. long. I'm going to try to upload some pics of her on here. Let me know what you think :).

I look forward to getting to know all of you (and your dogs) and learning more about the breed too.

Re: New here--with a question...

Sorry, I couldn't find the "edit" button and I wanted to add pics. If I can't post pics in this forum, lmk and I'll remove them.

First body shot:

Now the head shot:

I was thinking earlier, maybe she *is* purebred. I guess any Rotti I've seen before was not as long and "stockier" in body type.

Thanks for your thoughts!
Thanks for any input!

Aww shoot, I just realized the pics won't come up on this forum. I'll try posting them in the picture forum.

Re: New here--with a question...

Welcome and thanks for rescuing. Both our dogs are rescues too. One a rottie mix and one a GSD mix.

Your girl very well may be purebred, but came from less than perfect stock. Far too many people breed dogs with no regards to the standards, temperament or health issues of the breed. It sounds as though you love your girl and really that is all that matters:) You have found a wonderful place with great people and more information than you ever thought existed.

I look forward to seeing your girl's pictures in the gallery.

Re: New here--with a question...

Thanks for the welcome Harleychik. Yeah, I was thinking about the before. She very well could be purebred just not what is usual for the breed with her length.

I tried posting pics in the gallery, but it said they were too big and I don't know how to re-size them :(. She's got the exact markings of a Rotti and the same coat too. She's just longer and lighter than what I've seen, that's all.

I'm not concerned, she's a great dog and is adjusting well to our family. I found out today that she *loves* to play ball, she was literally jumping up into the air with joy before I could get her outside to play with her, lol.

What a wonderful person you are for giving her a forever home. All the care and love you give her, I promise you, she will repay a million fold. Whom ever coined the phrase "A dog is man's best friend", must have had a Rottweiler.

Thank you for taking her.

try opening them in a photo editing software program...you could download Picassa for free (its a google photo editor). Then "crop" the photo.

She looks "full" bred to me; but harleychick is right, many byb have little regard for "Breed standards". She is beautiful, and she will be forever grateful to you for rescuing her !

Re: New here--with a question...

I just saw the picture of your girl. She doesn't look like a mix to me. Ruby (what a cute name) is a very good looking girl, and she sure looks happy and content.

rotts all look a little different with length of legs, stubbiness and sometimes about thickness of the head or length of the muzzle. to me, she looks like she's pretty much rottie.

Re: New here--with a question...

Ruby is beautiful and looks very much Rottie. She is very lucky to have found her forever home.

Our Greta, also a rescue, was the result of BYB's and does not fit the standard. She is taller, longer and lankier than the standard. She also has the flying nun ears which led us to believe that she was a mix. Found out the contrary after some educating ourselves.

Thanks for giving Ruby a forever home.

She looks purebred to me. Good for you for rescuing her.

If you browse through pics in the Gallery, you will see that they don't all look alike, or like the breed standard. People have asked me if my girl is purebred; she has a more refined face and the "flying nun" ears; the Rottie down the street is even more out of standard -- too tall, coat wrong texture.

Ruby looks very happy.

Re: New here--with a question...

Thanks everyone! She's an absolute sweetie! She responds well to commands and is really smart. She had two messes last night, our fault, we let her have free roam. The previous nights she slept on our bedroom floor and was fine, so back to our b/r she goes, lol.
