Mosquito season... what can I do to protect my dog?

Hello all -
I live in New Jersey very close to the water and my area has a serious mosquito problem. I mentioned this to my vet who in turn recommended Advantix over Frontline because it contains a defense against mosquitos as well. However, I cannot stress how serious my mosquito problem is in my area. I am very concerned about my pup and am wondering what else I can do to protect him. My vet also recommended a citronella collar which is apparently made for dogs. I have yet to locate one, but was wondering if anyone has ever used one of these? Also, what else can I do to protect him? Thanks!

Where in NJ?You should be able to call Mosquito control to help get rid of the problem.Infact I just saw one of the trucks out already!

I live in spain at the moment and we use advantix for the same reason, we have citronella candles to keep the mozzies away from us but I haven't heard of the dog collars.

Look up Endure Fly Spray... It's a spray on repellent for dogs that repels and kills mosquitos as well. I think it is about 15-20 for a bottle.... Look up a pet medications website and type in mosquito, that will come up along with some other products. Good Luck!!

1. Protect your dog against heartworm (heartguard is great if you can get it in the US)

2. When its humid or just going on dusk, keep your dog inside

3. Use citrinella candles and Mosquito zappers

Is there some kind of lotion that you can get from your vet to put on your dog (kind of like a sunscreen but protects the dog from mosquito's, flies etc)?

I would talk to the vet first, but my mother-in-law in the bush of northwestern Ontario uses children's "OFF Skintastic" on her rottie to ward off the blackflies and mosquitoes. She says it works, but I don't know how safe it is for the dog. Funny enough we use it on the kids...but is it safe on our dogs?! LOL

I will check when i get home for the specific brand/name, but here in NH mosquito season starts now and doesn't end until September. They are brutal. I use a gel that comes in a small white bottle; my vet has it on hand and i go to their office to get it, but i'm sure you can order it online also. I put a dab in my hand and just rub onto my 2 rotts, focusing on their belly and head where the hair is thinner. it does a great job of keeping the bugs at bay. It has a slight odor to it and my dogs always sneeze after i put it on, but all in all it's worked well for me. I'll get the specifics and re-post the name, etc.

awesome! thanks everybody! I left a message for the mosquito control people, let's see if they get back to me. That gel sounds good if it's made for dogs... i'd be worried to use OFF on the dog because, well, my son won't lick it off himself, but Bongo might!

Maybe the Mos. control can tell you what works best on dogs also.

If you use Advantix or Frontline or whatever, I would not spray my dog with anything as you could possibly overdose your dog. I'd ask the vet if you could do both. In fact I do even use dog shampoo that says "kills fleas, ticks, etc." when I treat my dog with any insect control. Also beware of using Advantix if you have cats. That will kill a cat if it licks your dog. This goes for both the liquid or collar form.

I agree, and would add the early morning hours to try to avoid. In the event you can't avoid these times we have a ritual here where we stop the dogs before entering the house and they get a brushing with our hands to remove any lurking mosquitoes.

This is what I use on myself and the dogs too!
I spray it on my hands, and then rub it along the dogs fur...and around their face and groin area as well as their butt.
I also figure if it's supposed to be safe for children, it will be fine for the dogs.

No blackflies yet, or mosquitoes....probably another couple of weeks.

Now some wouldn't like this but I've been doing it with my dogs for may years .... I cook fresh garlic in a little olive oil and mix it into my dogs food. My Boy loves it...
