People are so ignorant Today I finally got my other half to go to the Doctor after he has been sick for two weeks now. So we are there waiting and this lady comes in with her arm wrapped in a towel all bloody. She tells the receptionist a dog bit her. So they ask what kind of dog and she said it was a yellow lab, who has bitten before. The receptionist, says no way, I have a yellow lab and he would not bite anyone, ever. Are you sure it was a purebred lab? The lady says, pretty sure, it's a small lab. So the receptionist says, oh then it must be mixed with pitbull, a lab would never do that. WHAT? Then they go on to say the dog lives outside, alone. It got out of the gate and bit this lady's arm pretty good. Do people not understand that any dog banished to the back yard can turn aggressive? Lab or not. I was just very relieved that they didn't say a rottie. I suppose I should have gone up there and explained that the so called dangerous breeds do not do most of the biting. But I just sat there with my sick guy and let them rant. At least one of them knows now that any breed can attack. Sharon

Re: People are so ignorant Yes; i do no labs can attack, BUT i didn't really no any labs, so that's probably why i made that un-educated comment on a thread... Sorry about that. People are extremely ridiculous though?! Just assume it's mixed with something known as a "dangerous breeds" (i have had "dangerouse" breeds all my life, pits, boxers, rotts, german shepherds, etc. I hardly think of them as dangerous, more like big teddy bears (: ) People need to snap back into reality, i've seen more vicous yorkies than these "dangerous breeds". People have no idea what they are talking about. I'm sorry about that Lab remark before!! Dezaree

Re: People are so ignorant Do people not understand that any dog banished to the back yard can turn aggressive? You are right about ignorant comments. People make them all the time. The fact that the dog is in the back yard has precisly zero to do with it turning aggressive. Many things trigger aggression but being in the back yard instead of in the house is not one of them. In reality I am called out to vaslty more problomatic dogs who live inside than out due to people spoiling such dogs and excusing their behavior. "Oh fee fee is just talking". My dogs all live in the house but I know many, many dogs who live very happy and fulfilling lives who spend the vast majority of it outside the house. Sure they will be happier living inside but this doesn't mean they are not happy because they are outside. The dog is amongst the most adaptable animals on the planet and is one of the reasons they have become our most used domesticated animal and they will be happy in almost any circumstances they are placed into. I would be much happier living on a tropical island, sipping magaitas and working on my tan all day. The fact that I can't do this doesn't make me unhappy with what I have now. I know this is off topic. Mick.

Re: People are so ignorant Uh, Mick? Isn't Australia sort of a tropical island? ;-P Unfortunately, ignorant people are just that. I had to listen to a lady 'brag' about how much she paid for her labradoodle, and how they come in three sizes just the other day. All this while waiting to start our OB class. Sheesh, if I could have rolled my eyes higher!

Re: People are so ignorant Haha; i roll eyes at my ignorant people about dogs also. When i take my rottweiler and pitbull out to OB class i always here, "Ugh, oh my god, I don't want neither one of them NEAR my dog!! I'll kick it if it comes near my dog!" Uhm, excuse me.. But, if you kick one of MY babies, theres going to be a problem!! LOL. My dogs are SO well behaved; people just don't understand. They are my teddy bears [= Dezaree

Re: People are so ignorant That woman is outrageous! She owns one out of the millions of Labs in the this country so she is an expert on every single one. I know she would never believe any of us if we told her how sweet and well behaved our rotties are. It's just plain stupidity to think that a breed that has been as popular and overbred as the Labrador Retriever has been for over a decade, could never attack. I surprised that we don't hear about a Lab attack everyday! It just goes to show how biased the media is. The worst dogs I've ever known were either Labs or Chihuahuas, but I don't go around telling people that every one is dangerous or will "turn" on its owner.

Re: People are so ignorant In our neigbourhood everyone "fears" a male Golden Retriever, cause when he gets loose and breaks out from his yard he just goes and bites pretty much every male that is close and has also accidently bitten a person by attacking their dog. And when our fem. Rott tried to break out some time ago, they would just bring her back to our yard. "the scary Golden Retriever is loose again"....

Re: People are so ignorant Yes, it's really frustrating. I got bit by a dog when I was a kid.... and I was not the only one he bit, and he had to be put to sleep.... the breed? A poodle. All dogs can bite - regardless of breed.

Re: People are so ignorant I used to volunteer with a lab rescue. Oh my, yes, they can definitely bite. I transported two who were declared a danger and put down. I have attended numerous seminars in which experts are consistently pointing out that breeding for appearance without regard to temperament is producing unexpected numbers of aggressive labs and goldens. The most poignant example was a video of an eight week old golden who was viciously food aggressive. The speaker had been called in to advise the family. His conclusion was that the puppy should be put down. Shelters are also seeing three week old pups who are exhibiting aggression by three weeks, regardless of breed. Just sad.

Re: People are so ignorant when I lived in MA a few years back, there was an incident that attracted a great deal of media attention. A yellow lab. was sentenced to be euthanized (judge's order) for biting someone. The owner send the dog out of state and told the authorities that it had died of natural causes (I don't recall how he pulled that stunt 'cause I thought the dog would have been inpounded). Well...wouldn't ya know it! The darn dog bit someone else! The authorities caught up to the man and dog...eventually...
